The convicted killer of St. George resident Becky Jo Jones, will serve every minute of his 15 year manslaughter sentence without chance of parole. Its a pity that we dont have more than 15 years to keep you. Utah Board of Pardons Chairperson told Robert William Labrum November 20th when he faced the board to request parole. The Board of Pardons took several things into account when considering Labrum for parole including his juvenile record, previous police record, his behavior since his conviction, the opinions of the judge and attorneys involved and a petition that was signed by 3,834 Southern Utahns asking that Labrum serve his full 15 year sentence. Labrum, now' 23, was originally charged with murder for strangling first-degr- Ms. Jones during a party in the St. George home of his grandparents on August 13, 1986. I guess I better clean up, was Labrum s remark when he awoke the next morning and discovered the body. He then hid her body into a steamer trunk where it stayed for two days before he transferred it to a shallow grave near the Washington County landfill with the help of his wife. The body was not recovered until March 19, after Labrum drew a map of the gravesite for officials in exchange for being allowed to plead to second-degre- e felony manslaughter. Labrum still staunchly claims that he passed out at the party and blames the death of Ms. Jones on two hitchhikers who were supposedly at the same party. However, there is no evidence that the two men exist. Its very callous and very telling that you tried to cover up the death from the beginning. said board member Gary Webster. You got one heck of a plea bargin. Ms. Palacios said she found it particularly disturbing that Labrum traded the location of the body for a reduced plea. You had an opportunity to ease (the familys) distress, she said. You were particularly callous to trade a plea for the location of her body. Labrum said that his lawyers were just trying to find the best deal for me. Board members were appalled by Labrums behavior following the murder of Ms. Jones and were apparently unimpressed with his attempts of rehabilitation while serving the first part of his sentence.
