Show Page 2 DIXIE SUN February 27, 1987 Letters to the Editor Sidewalk talk Dear Editor Violent cartoons are bad for kids Jerry Campbell & Ron Rushton SUi- - Staff Writers What ever happened to the Jetsons, Scooby Doo, and The Flintstones7 Dont we have anything better for our children to do besides watching violent cartoons as such Rambo, Transformers, and HeMan7 The list goes on and on Our kids wake up early Saturday and Sunday mornings to watch cartoons, they come from school and what do they do7 Watch more violent cartoons What happened to the mud Paradise Ron Rushton SUN Staff Writer pie making age7 Seems to me that kids arent playing as much anymoie, instead theyre staying indoors being hypnotized by television Now that television has taken over most of the socializing devices (parents, playing, friends), the question needs to be ask ed Does television teach children incorrect methods in dealing with social life7 The United Stales has the highest violent crime rales in the world Many authorities believe that violent movies and television shows are partly responsible Both children and adults alike in warmth Friday, Saturday and Sunday was a much needed break from the winter Flawau was to be the land of my destination, but all was not to be Im in the Air National Guard and I I - r- every month one of our planes travels to Hawaii If you are lucky, there is room for passengers I happened to get lucky enough to get a free ride to Hawaii So there I was, free plane ride, hotel reservations and anticipation by the truckload After speeding through Utah up to Salt Lake, I found out that the pilots hadn't reserved hotel rooms in advance That cancelled all plans for Hawaii, options but there were other Maybe Florida, maybe Puerto Rico, maybe Washington D C , but to my dismay, they chose Orange County California dont know about the rest of the readers, but cant stand that part of the world1 Id rather go to North Dakota than I would there1 Needless to say, I stayed home So I stayed at home and pretended that I was in Hawaii (Id been there before), and this is what I did First off, I arrived in the evening The sweet smell of pineapple and 1 flowers invaded my senses I got my rent a car and dumped off all my luggage at the hotel After that, 1 visited all the night clubs and drank Mai Tais until 1 felt very Hawaiian The next day (after I fought a hang over), I went to the beach Beautiful women paraded up and down the white sands of Waikiki beach, did a little swimming and then got ready to see the island The mountians are sharp, steep monsters that disappear in the STUDENT OPINION It s definitely a Barry Bundy glorified high school I went to Dixie High School, and its aoout the same as Dixie College Its alright in certain ways, but not if you really want a good education character What kind of values are the children of the 80s going to have7 Is the crime rate going to rise in the years to come due to violent cartoons and prime time television shows7 These are some other questions we must ask ourselves If we dont, whats going to be the sa'vation of children of the 80s when they reach adulthood7 We should look at this issue, and look at it hard before our fantasy shows become excessively violent realities Toni Pasin Its the first time Ive been to college, so to me its different than high school Since I live away from home, its different in that respect. But if you happen to live at home, I guess it could be a lot like high school on" I was raised in a society where sidewalks were made for walking on not for the riding of motorized vehicles Already this year there has been a couple of mishaps caused by people who have followed such a practice I know that there is a school regulation against riding motorized vehicles on the sidewalks Maybe if security handed out a couple of tickets to these people, word would get around that sidewalks were invented to be walked onn Sincerely, A Sidewalk almost in S.L.C. 1 Last weekend was to be one spent fantasize themselves as a rough, tough I think its about time someone did something about the students that believe sidewalks were made to ride their motorcycles and little scooters clouds Green bushes and tall coconut trees cover the island What a contrast from the vegitationless landscape of St George (St George still has one of my favorite landscapes) Nothing that I can say can adequately describe Hawaii and the unique atmosphere found there After a rough day of sight seeing, the clubs become the main attraction once again At the end of my stay I am almost totally broke Between the $2 50 whoppers and the $4 50 mixed drinks, Im glad the trip home is Walking Student Lousy radio news manner It seemed to us that the DJ giving the news update treated the news as if it were some sort of joke Being a college radio station, we thought KRDC might regard the community, state and international news with respect because of the seriousness most news holds in today's world Please consider our comments to be sincere You could possibly use them to your own advantage Dont embarrass us further, treat the news as it deserves to be treated Sincerely, Patti Prather and Lezlie Crump Dear Editor I come from a big city that has good rounded stories on the radio news briefs They talk about things that we as intelligent people like to hear whats going on in our community and around the world as well Here in St George, KRDC simply makes jokes on the news briefs and obvioulsy arent serious about them But, how about the people who would like to know whats going on7 They dont want to listen to a bunch of jokes It just isnt worth spending time to listen to I hope in the future KRDC will consider Dear Editor My roommate and I were driving back into St George from Salt Lake last weekend and were excited when we were once again able to bring the schools radio station back into reception Our excitement faded however when the station news break was aired It was done in a very unprofessional the community information that would be helpful to know rather than senseless, insulting news breaks Sincerely, Tony Zickella ST GEORGE A parked Volkswagen Bug steadily builds up a layer of Snow as a result of three days of foul weather that hit St George this past week The snow was more than somewhat of a surprise for most people who usually refer to the (SUN city as the Land of the Sun photo Kelly Moulton) giving free Coming home to the cold reality of Salt Lake, I am sad I climb in that old pick up truck of mine and drive 310 miles back to St George First thing Monday, I seriously con- of self template the notion mutilation Some day Ill make Hawaii (either in it reality back to or in insanity) Do you believe that Dixie College is a legitimate college, or simply a glorified high school? Ron Husband "Its just like a high school because everyone knows everyone. Teachers are all on a first name basis, it s not what you would think a college would be like I think that DixBecky Jones ie is a legitimate college. Its a little school and a lot of the students come here just to have also many students that take it seriously fun, but there are Lisa Beckstrand I think that it is a legitimate college because Ive learned much more here than I did in high school. I also believe that socially it s the same as high school I feel that Ive learned a lot here, and that Dixie is a good transition from high school. |
