School got of to a great start last week with a full schedule of events and activities. Even cooperate very much, everyone had a great time meeting new people as well as getting with old friends. It all got started with the Welcome Back dance held on September 19 on the old tennis courts. The very next day, there was a football game at the stadium against Phoenix. It was a great game especially since we won. Sunday, September 22, we were honored to hear from St. George Mayor, Karl Brooks at a fireside that evening in the Institute. Monday, Sept. 22, the Presidents assembly, and academic orientation & advisement were held in the gym for all new Freshmen. That evening, the LDSSA sponsored meet your bishop night at the institute, which was highlighted by hamburgers made by the bishoprics and institute staff. The St. George pool and hydrotube were also open for the festivities that evening for fun and games. ! the TRYING TO DECIDE ON A MAJOR? Theres a better way! though mother nature didnt ; despite Welcome Week a Huge Success Welcome ! bookstore, keeper, Ken Downs, has only been here at Dixie College for three months, but he has been in the St. George area for about five years. He originally comes from the Ogden, Utah area. Mr. Downs last position was at the Green Valley Golf Course, where he was in charge of maintaining the grounds. Mr. Downs built the Green Valley Golf Course and has been in the golf course business for over 28 years. He also built the White Barn Golf Course in Ogden, Utah, which is one of the most beautiful in the state. Mr. Downs left the golf course business because he was tired of working at golf courses and wanted to get into college landscaping. He has a great Many students braved the elements and had a great time playing volleyball, basketball, trying to do a triple back flip dive with a half twist before hitting the water in a perfect belly flop. Everyone there would like to thank the lifeguards who orientation workshops for the freshmen. The sand blast had to be postponed due to bad weather, but the moonlight madness sale went on with approximate 1746 bodies squeezed into the sun room. That breaks the old record of ap1543. proximate Wednesday, Sept. 24, we found out why we all are supposed to be here. Classes got off to a good start no matter if we were ready for them or not! That night the meet the faculty BBQ was held under the pillers at the FA building. Did you ever think you would see Dr. Barnum flipping burgers for a bunch of hungery kids? Remember that sight next time he gives you 60 pages of notes to study for a little quiz the next day. After that broke up, everyone filed over to the pillow movie in the gym. Young Frankenstein was the feature flim shown. Thursday, September 25, we had the LDSSA opening social at the institute. Who will ever forget seeing Max Rose leaping around in a leotard and anten-nae- s impersonating the sandman. If you missed it, you missed the closest thing to a good old fashioned religious revival that youll ever see in St. George. Brenda Bowles unveiled a song that she wrote especially for the LDSSA, and everyone sang along. A dance followed. Friday, September 26, was I love Dixie day. Everyone who went to the movie had a great time, and a lot of pizza, while they watched Some Like It Hot with Marilyn Monroe. There was also a special at Brentwood bowl of $1.25 per game. Saturday, September 27 was quite a conclusion to the week. Those who werent afraid of the rain and cold saw Dixie shred the Scottsdale Ar- tichokes, even though our team was not 100 percent due to injuries. We also want to thank the band who showed up even though they only had two days to learn music before the game. The cheerleaders and Rodney Rebel also added a lot of spirit and support to the team. The game was followed by the first chance dance. There were wall to wall bodies everywhere you looked. Well, that about sums up most of the happenings of welcome week. If you missed them, you really missed out on a lot. Make sure you come on out to the rest of the activities this year, get involved, and most of all, HAVE FUN!sm desire to make the Dixie College campus even more lovely than it already is. Mr. Downs hopes to keep the campus in an easily maintainable condition. Mr. Downs wants to reduce the expenses of maintaining the grounds here at Dixie, and make cuts wherever possible. As water is a precious thing here at Dixie, he wants to cut down on unnecessary water usage. Mr. Downs would like all the students here at Dixie to help keep the campus clean. He would like them to not only throw trash in appropriate receptacles, but also to pick up the litter that other students may have thrown down. He said, if only one out of ten students would pick up litter, it would really help.
