Alder to Guide Dixie College into the Future College began its 75th Diamond Jubilee year with many new faces around campus, and a new man at the helm of the Rebel ship. Dr. Douglas D. Alder, a professor of history and director of the honors program at Utah State University, resigned his position after 23 years to accept the role as president of Dixie College. The position of president opened up last May when Dr. Alton L. Wade, president at Dixie College since 1980, accepted the invitation to become i. president of After Dr. Wades departure at the end of Spring Quarter 1986, it was up to the faculty of Dixie to contact people they felt were qualified for the position, and on August 5th of this year, the Utah State Board of Regents announced that Dr. Alder would take over. Faculty members here asked me to be a candidate, comDixie 1986-8- '..! N 7, Jt.Vv $ Woman Hit By Truck, Sustains Minor Injuries On the morning of September 29, at 7:50 a.m., Dorothy Huntsman was driving eastbound on 300 south in direct sunlight. According to campus security, Dorothy, driving a mazda pickup, swerved to go around a car making a left hand turn into the Trades and Industries parking lot. The truck hit Kathleen Hamby walking eastbound on the right hand side of the road, throwing her over the hood of the pickup. Mrs. Hamby suffered back injuries and was sent to the St. George Medical center, where upon writing of this story, she was still recovering. According to Don Reid, St. George police were called in to investigate the accident; no one was cited due to direct sunlight on the east bound pickup. The students of Dixie College should examine this accident seriously. At times during the day, especially from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., drivers should be careful due to students getting out of classes at that time. Students should also be very careful while walking to school in the morning because the sunlight, as in this particular case shines directly in the drivers eyes during the morning hours. Even though you may see them, they might not see you. It is indeed ironic that the first car - pede-- , rian accident of this school year would involve a college student rather than a grade school child. JC Oregon. BYU-Hawai- Dixie College's new President, Dr. Douglas D. Alder, Is excited about tbe 75th Diamond Jubilee Year. His first goal of tbe year is to get to know the faculty. 1959, he went on to pursue his PhD at the University of As far as the students at Dixconcerned, President Alder offers several pieces of good advice for those wanting ie are to make something of themselves in life. My advice is go to the library and study no less than four hours a night. Dont try to study in your dorm, not on your bed, not with your buddies, not with the radio playing. Normally what happens is you set yourself up to study and youre in a place where you get interupted. He added, You have to go against the stream. The stream will never be that everybody studies four hours a day, the stream is play. Although President Alder has only been at Dixie College for a short time, he is greatly impressed with many things, the foremost of which are the faculty, and the community. The most impressive thing is how cooperative people are. The city is so supportive of the college. There are dozens of people who give their free time to help the college. The faculty members help each other from one division to another, he continued. Its amazing how well they cooperate. Thats a real benefit to the college.
