Show DIXIE SUN February 11, 1983, Page 7 Toms Opinion Whats Americas Favorite Sport? Tom Wittig What is Americas favorite sport? Is it baseball, basketball, football, hockey, or polo? I think it would be the sport that adds the most excitement. So, lets sort them out and come to a logical conclusion. For the past century, baseball has been considered Americas sport. There was no better family activity than going to the good ole ballpark and relaxing in the sun. Today, baseball is still a great family activity, but poor pops must give up a quarter of his paycheck to bring his family to the game. Also, watching baseball on television can be as exciting as watching your grandmother knit. But, during the summer, zillions of youngsters participate in little leagues. The same goes for adults who play softball. Theres definetly an interest in baseball. Basketball is a game of much action. Its also a game of intelligence. Many people claim that some basketball players who were outstanding talents as youngsters never see the real world as it is, only the green pastures of the NBA. Thus, its no secret why major college players have a larger percentage of flunkies than any other collegiate sport. A high school teacher of mine once told me, I had to work my tail off to attend college, while some guy who can shoot baskets and warm the bench gets a scholarship. I was a potential doctor, while he was a potential dingbat. He couldnt even read at the fifth grade level. Some by people dont enjoy watching ten people run up and down a floor shooting at baskets. Many others enjoy the excitement and thrills basketball vides. To me, basketball players are the best athletes on the globe. They need to be in top shape at all times. The NBA has a gruesome schedule. Pros may play five games in one week, sometimes in five different cities. They play from October until possibly June. (The Cleveland Cavaliers and the San Diego Clippers ieason is over even before they begin training camp). The long season hurts the NBA. College basketball is Gods gift to the game. I can feel the enthusiasm and excitement every game I see. Pro players at times may not give their full effort simply because theyre too tired. When I pay ten dollars to see a game, I dont care if they ran the Boston Marathon that morning, I want my moneys worth. Basketball has its ups and downs. Football, especially before this past seasons strike, was being considered by many to be Americas favorite. It has become an American habit of kicking back in front of the Boob Tube on Sunday afternoons with a bag of pretzels and watching football. If one didnt get enough on Sunday, there is always ABCs Monday Night Football which is always on top of the ratings. It seems the fans never really get sick of the game. That may soon change. Give it a hundred years and people will know what it is. I sure dont. In my opinion, baseball is still Americas favorite. One final note. If professional athletes keep asking for ridiculous salaries, the fans may decide to go on permanent strike. Then none of the sports will be very popular. voun Trai-i- S' A hth'jtN Sf until Januaury. After the Super Bowl, pigskin fans can look ahead to the new USFL season, which will begin in March. Pro football may soon get overcooked. Hockey is slowly but surely becoming very popular.
