Just thought I'd mention it Ute quarterback Frank Dolce will have only an indirect impact on the Ute defense Saturday determined mainly on how long he can keep the offense on the field But the senior QB knows the key to the whole Ute game: "It's character check time We're not quite sure where we are What we have to prove is that we can play four quarters — on both sides of the ball" If the Utes prove that then the 32 WAC quarters they have left after Saturday without any "bye" weeks will take on a far greater 17-1- 0 -0 2:j 1 t I ' 111' -- 4'0 ' -- lk t o ' t ': : 4 '0' ti 1: ''s‘ A ' holdouts were made free agents on Thursday by a federal judge whose ruling may have opened the door for nearly 390 players whose contracts expire at the end of the season Judge David Doty ruled that the four — Philadelphia's Keith ro-- L z ii t 4 4 ' :::'-- :' otitilt t4 t r — ' 4ts f t 4 - ''' '' : I 1 k '' 1 - Jackson Detroit's DJ Dozier Cleveland's Webster Slaughter and New England's Garin Veris — still were suffering the effects of the NFL's Plan B free agency system A federal jury ruled on Sept 10 that Plan B under which teams are allowed to protect 37 players each year violates federal antitrust laws Thursday's decision was the first practical impact of that ruling -Some pundits watching the process have said this isn't news until a player is set free and that's what happened today- Doug Allen vice president of the NFL Players' Association said "And that's an absolute watershed for NFL 11k r 44i 14 - ' i it 4 4 '' I :la ''' '' - I ' - AT i 49 : N lt- ---44- ' s ''r of 04tp ' - :v 41"'- -- "4 ' - 4 - '':4:'!"f41-- - :: '' ' ' 00 :' ' fy ' k't ' 4 - 1 '''r ' i 1 5 likaor--- i" ( fisik‘ 0 1 46 - 47MvoAdtoktito 44 ike' 44 1 1 ' zi00014i404st-e'''4-4- 4 - " ':: I' '''' 0'!f - 0 '' 4 : i di!' scinded dared DeHoog ineligi- ble for the remainder of the season "My life has been in limbo for two weeks" said DeHoog "It's nice to get it back" DeHoog was declared Delloog ineligible Sept 11 after the NCAA ruled he had used up his four seasons of eligibility in the allotted five years At issue was the 1989 season when DeHoog left school to battle a drug problem After undergoing treatment the Ute tackle returned in 1990 and was told his eligibility had been extended an extra year But because of a paperwork snafu the situCion was never solved An anonymous call to the 1VAC office on Sept 7 questioned DeHoog's status which triggered an d : investigation that resulted in the original NCAA ruling Utah's appeal was based on DeHoog having a legitimate medical reason to be out of school in 1989 The Utes' case was bolstered by the testimony of Dr Gary Jorgensen who advised DeHoog to leave school return home to Oregon and get treatment "We presented a good case and they the NCAA understood- - said athletic director Chris Hill "They saw that what Mike went through was a serious challenge to him that his course of action was legitimate and that he was successful We're appreciative of the NCAA comof the mittee" "Everybody knows how hard Mike has worked to get here" said coach Ron McBride "This sends out a real positive message" DeHoog who has worked out on his own for the last two weeks rejoined his teammates at Thursday's practice McBride is unsure how much DeHoog will play Saturday against Oregon State but the tackle says he'll be ready to go "Not practicing for two weeks hurts" he said "but can make up for that with enthusiasm" C airomwmmmia61mmakimimillistliniooeamim Milwaukee 4 California 0 Oakland 4 Chicago 1 Kansas City 2 Seattle 0 Philadelphia 3 Chicago 2 (10) St Louis 4 New York 3 (14) Cincinnati 8 Los Angeles 4 National League Magic Numbers San Francisco 4 Atlanta 0 San Diego 7 Houston 1 Pittsburgh 9 Montreal 3 Oakland (AL West) Pittsburgh (NL East) Atlanta (NL West) Toronto (AL East) 5 at Expos 6 ErBSD 8 at Padres TV Sports riSi111 2 3 5:30 pm -
