As a kid the arrival of autumn signalled the coming of my second favorite holiday Wood smoke and hot apple pie smells filled the air Squash and tomatoes yellowed on withered vines Reddish golden leaves snapped loose from tree branches in the chilly breeze and fluttered down to blanket the back yard I jack-o-lanter- n - - -- k: X-ra- y jack-o-lanter- n hoboes heavenly angels Robin Hoods and headless horsemen fearlessly roamed the streets oohing and aahing and guessing who was who No one worried about child molesters or poison in Mrs Lamb's chocolate chip cookies No one imagined razor blades in caramel apples or needles in the popcorn balls We ate everything in our bags sealed or not and the belly aches we suffered had nothing to do with rat poison or laxatives!
