Only the comforting sound of their footsteps and the swishing of their white uniforms could be heard as Karen Akers and Elizabeth Petrulak made their rounds at the Murray Manor Convalescent Center. It was about 4 20 a m. when the pair entered Room 142, according to the coroners report. Akers, a registered nurse, stood on the left side of Joseph Lucas bed next to his respirator, across from Petrulak, a respiratory technician, as they began clearing the patients breathing passages, the report said. Irritated by a disturbing noise produced by the respirator, Akc.s turned off the machine and continued the suctioning work, according to the report. When the women finished, they left the room. At 4 40 a m., an alarm on a pump began ringing in Lucas room, the report said. Akers returned and found the patient unresponsive. She also noticed the respirator wTas still off, according to the report. She frantically turned the respirator on and called for help, the report said, but it was too late.
