Show ONE GENT CENT LETTER POSTAGE postmaster general albert S buile buik son eon recently appointed by president wilson to take charge of 0 the postal affairs of the united states states state is heartily in favor ot of one cent letter postage ile he so announced himself to a delegation representing the national one one cent letter postage association which waited on him in washington a few days ago T P 1 I am heartily in favor of one cent letter postage declared postmaster I 1 general Bu burleson who went on to explain that he hoped to bring it about just as soon as revenues of 0 the de apartment part ment could be adjusted the postmaster general told the advocates of one cent letter postage that he had long believed that their con was right ile ho stated however that as head of 0 the department it was his business to see that sufficient revenue erbue was raised to meet all expenses and while he admitted that there was a big surplus received from first class mail each year he added that it would he be necessary to make such an adjustment of rates as would put the department on a business basis postmaster general burleson Bu Is strongly in favor of putting the postal department on an efficient basis ile he also favors adequate compensation for postal employees and such a readjustment of rates as will permit the operation of the department in a busness iness like manner senator theodore E burton from ohio and representative charles L bartlett from georgia have re intro deuced one cent letter postage bills in the senate and house of representatives ta tives these bills call for the inauguration augu ration of one cent letter postage by july 1 of this year senator burton barton has hag long championed the battle foj for g one jone cent letter postage while representative bartlett has fa faired favored ored the cheaper rate for many years A strong advocate for lower rate is lion hon james J britt of asheville NC who recently retired from the position of third assistant postmaster general 1 I am heartily in favor declared sir ar britt ot of abe tb immediate reduction of letter postage from two cents an ounce toone to one cent per ounce for these reasons it will promote general intelligence r and will improve the social relations of the people it will advance the business interests of the country by lowering the cost of communication the rate of one cent an ounce for letters with the increase of 0 mallman mailman ter which the reduction will induce will defray the cost of handling bandling and transportation but few public questions are ot of such vast concern to the great body ot of the american people and I 1 earnestly hope it IL may receive the early and serious attention of the congress i |
