his parents were poor anil and he was early sent out among strangers to work and shift for himself ile he wits apprenticed to a shoemaker but not liking king the trade took to farming when he be was what these men had to tell so lie he sent for some of the elders to come to his home to see it if there was really re ally anything worth while in this new religion elders ole swenson and christopher faulkman came to his home and expounded the gospel to them and they at once became convinced of its truthfulness ile he invited the missionaries to come to his house and hold meetings which started persecutions in earnest ile he laid away an nis oad bad habits and began to lead a steady ccady sober and god fearing life ile he no longer met with his friends at the inn where they would sit and play cards card sand and drink all night but instead would spend his evenings vt at home st studying the bible or meet with the few saints in their small but spirited gatherings in 1852 he and his wife and oldest son august joined the church ile he often had to flee tor for his life and the elders were threatened with destruction it they did not leave the island in the summer of iza 2 it was decided to baptise the family so the elders came cameto to the home only to find a crowd of brats awaiting them one ot of the elders christopher raul faulkman kman was dragged out and cruelly beaten and real mal treated but was finally left bleeding and senseless by the mob who supposed they had bad killed him ile he regain ed consciousness and was cared for by the few saints grandfather valentine labored as a missionary about a year on the island when be sold his farm and prepared to leave tor for utah so in the fall of 53 3 lie he together with john johnson and james dames ipsen left jett for the promised land ills his oldest son august had preceded them a year and was now staying with john forsgren in brigham city together with james olsen grandfather paid for seven other
