Much of this was out of their hands. The company was in the throes of takeover shakedown. It seemed almost no one was too certain how long he or she would have a job. Right smack in the middle of ABCs sessions, word came from New York that the president of the network, Fred Pierce, had resigned after failing to work out an arrangement with the new ABC bosses from Capital Cities Communications. (Virtually everyone concluded he had been forced out.) That precipitated the mass management meeting in New York that sent ABC executives scurrying like small animals in a forest fire. At least one major event had to be canceled outright. ABC would announce certain stars who would attend a dinner interview. Many never showed up. The only significant ABC executive still in a position of importance, News and Sports President Roone Arledge, was nowhere to be seen with good reason. He was the subject of rumors of pressure by the Cap Cities bosses to relinquish his sports authority. This week, when ABC announced that a final decision was made to go ahead with the Amerika show, there was more than a little suspicion that the networks hand had been forced. The show had to go on or the network would be put in the position of having wimped out to the Russians not exactly a strong marketing ABC acknowledged that playing the show might mean its news division would have to pay a price in reprisals from the Soviets. The network is in utter disarray. I can tell because I just spent several days in ABCs company at the recently completed press trip to Los Angeles. The idea of this trip is to show the press what new and exciting things the network has coming up for the rest of the television season. In ABCs portion of the trip this year, it showed off its latest lumps and bruises, from where the latest bricks have fallen, then tripped over its feet trying to leave the room. In past years ABC was so buttoned-dow- n at these sessions it was almost frightening. ABC executives would be extensively prepped before every press conference. Absolutely everything was organized. ABC would carefully manage events, bringing out stars at the right time (And here is Carol Burnett!), bringing in an entertainer from some upcoming show who could perform for the visiting press (Robin Williams was a memorable highlight). Whatever else was said about ABC, it usually was an impressively run organization. This time ABC was about as organized as the last exit from Saigon. Nothing worked precisely right; not the press conferences, not the star interviews, not even the press releases. (They were full of mistakes; one even had Williams first name spelled Robyn.) Lance Guest plays Orson largely with his eyeballs, whose shifts register perplexity, temptation, exasperation and suppressed rage. He is especially bothered by the success Henry has with the prettiest girl on campus. The viewer is asked to take Henrys unlikely way with women on faith, no easy job. Barry Miller, as Henry, makes an engaging entrance as a homegrown screwball, but we learn far less about his background than Orsons, and as the play goes on, he becomes a touch too resourceful for belief. "I think you're a nut, Orson tells Henry, and Henry tells Orson that hes intolerant of people. Both are correct, but not very revealing. Despite much evidence of a clash of what a few years later would be called life styles (Orson goes to church every day and prays, Henry tears up telegrams from his draft board), the two never become much more than pawns of an unprobing script. r I if if .'
