During the 1960s and 1970s, message capacity and transmission power of the active communications satellites were greatly increased. The first satellite of the Intelsat 4 series, launched in 1971, provided 4,000 voice circuits. The Intelsat 5 satellites (a senes of nine, the first of which was launched in December 1980) have a capacity of 12,000 voice circuits, which can be replaced in y part or completely by color television. Present-da- y commercial satellites provide a wide range of services. Television programs are relayed to cable systems throughout the United States and digital data are transmitted 100 times faster than by the land lines. The International Maritime Satellite Organization (Marisat), founded in July 1979, provides telex, telephone and digital data links between ships, offshore facilities and shore stations that are distributed all over the world. An dling of a large number of ground stations is the scanning beam technique, which combines the advantages of frequency reuse and the TDMA technique The use of laser beams for communications with passive or active satellites is currently under development Laser beams permit a much larger message capacity than do radio speed digital and voice-Tlinkages Because of the number of ground stations making use of the same satellite is increasing, new techniques have been introduced to augment the message capacity of communications satellites. The multiple access method (TDMA) allows a large number of ground stations to make use of the same channel by assigning time slots during which each ground station can communicate with the satellite. By Paul Nichols . The board of education generally holds two meetings each month with a business section held on the second Tuesday at district headquarters in American Fork, and an informal meeting on the fourth Tuesday of the month. The second meeting gives the public the change to address board members on any topic and is held at one of the local schools in the district. Along with the public input, meeting will discuss a proposal to implell ment a year-roun- d schedule at Orchard School in Orem. Partner is showing a strong, dibalanced hand with a five-car- d amond suit. In other words, he must have at least two hearts, which makes that a playable suit. Since there is no guarantee that your heart suit will be cashable at no trump, we would retreat to the relative safety of a four heart Q.2 Neither vulnerable, as South you hold. 103 :853 .96 QJ7652 The bidding has proceeded. Now, however, you are faced with the choice of trying for nine tricks at no trump or 11 at a club game. While you are likely to go down fewer tricks at a club game if things go badly, we feel your best chance for A. game is in the no trump contract Pass. However, your singleton heart should be a warning of a possible misfit. Your hand is rich in defensive values, so we would opt for a penalty double. However, if you are scientifically inclined and do not like gambling on finding partner with a spade guard, you could try three hearts and leave it up to him. Since you didnt bid hearts at the l, it cant be a genuine suit. one-leve- Q.5 Both vulnerable, as South you hold: TK9832 54 J106 CQ72 The bidding has proceeded. When partner converts your takeout double to penalties, he is showing a very powerful holding in the enemy suit. Your aim, therefore, should be to prevent declarer from winning tricks in hand with low trumps by means of ruffing. To this end, you should lead a heart so that your side can extract declarers trumps as soon as possible. one-lev- el ) - tj? ,4-1- ' Counselors: 1st Step to Better Grades Is Determining Cause of Problem By Dawn Tracy Tribune Education Writer Reasons for failure at school may be as diverse as a student forgetting to bring pencil and paper to class, a course or sloppiness about homework assignments. The first step in improving poor grades is to determine whats causing the problem, according to Bingham High counselors who work with failing students. "Students need help in determining exactly whats causing the problem," said Bingham counselor Yvonne Cardwell. "I dont know of anyone who likes getting even one failing often, its just a matter of grade figuring out what to do to change things." Counselor Ken Cox tells students to determine individual peak learning times, which for many is no more than five to ten minutes in length. Af ter studying for that time span, youngsters may need to take a short break or to switch to another subject to get through material comfortably. Listening to the radio or television while studying can be exhausting because the brain can absorb only so much at one time," he said. "Its easier for most students if the environment is comfortable and quiet. The end result may mean that the student can get through study material quickor get through it at all. ly Students may need to understand immediate benefits from studying, according to counselor Tom Worlton. For some, rewards may be no more than not being nagged by parents or not having to take a class over again. Tve asked students that if they dont like English, why they want to repeat the course," he said.
