Show Churches By Melinda Sowerby Tribune Church Editor Elder James M. Shaw will be installed as pastor of Mount Zion Church of God in Christ. 552 W. 300 South, during special services at the luirch at 3 30 p m. on Sunday Elder R. E. Hurrington. administrative assistant of the Utah Jurisdiction of the Church of God in Christ and the former pastor at Mount Zion, will be the guest speaker. The public is invited to attend. Elder Shaw is presently the director of the Marshall White Center in Ogden, where he will continue to serve until a new director is named. Before taking over pastoral duties at Mount Zion Church on April 7, he served as minister in charge, at Finley Temple Church of God in Christ in Ogden. The pastor at Finley Temple was Bishop Nathanial Jones, in Los Angeles, but the bishop appointed a minister in charge to act for him at Finley Temple hanchurch activities. dling Elder Hurrington has since been appointed pastor of Finley Temple. Elder Shaw has spent a lifetime in church life. His father was a minister in the American Methodist Episcopal denomination. His mother was a member of the COGIC. "My people were church going people." He's either going to help the congregation grow in maturity or bring new members into the fellowship. he said Elder Shaw believes there are enough people to reach out to in the area, he will have no trouble building the congregation without taking away from other congregations. He plans to continue a teaching program already in place at the church to enrich our members with Gods word." That teaching program not only includes Sunday School but a Wednesday night Bible study focusing on the Book of Acts. Then on Friday nights, a class on Christian doctrines is offered. Both classes are scheduled for 7 p.m. Describing his style of ministry as "emotional," Elder Shaw believes people who like that style will come to his services. He especially enjoys the preaching on the book of Acts book of the Bible on which the COGIC was based. That philosophy is the experience of being filled with the Holy Spirit, and includes speaking in tongues. Elder Shaw would like all Christians to have the experience of being filled with the Holy Spirit. However, he doesn't believe Christians should bicker over their differences. There's enough commonality between us, we should lay aside our differences. There will always be people who need to be saved," he said. One of Elder Shaw's favorite sayings comes from Bishop Jones who said, "There is a shortage of everything but sinners. Go get em." Elder Shaw chuckles. Elder Shaw calls the COGIC a solid Christian Church, explaining members believe in the Trinity of God the Father, Son and Holy that through Adam, sin was Spirit brought into the world and that all men can be born again. In addition, the COGIC believes salvation is by faith in Jesus Christ, which is a gift from God something no man can earn. The church also teaches that Jesus Christ died for our sins, that he was resurrected and will return to earth. The church teaches baptism by immersion. The COGIC teaches all people should lead clean lives. Members support the church through tithes and offerings. It also teaches divine healing. In addition to the Wednesday and Friday night teaching services, Sunday School is held at 9:45 a.m. Sundays, with an 11 a.m. worship ser- . day-to-da- y he said. born-agai- Tribune Stoff Photo by n Denver Bishop Retiring This Summer DENVER (AP) United Methodist Bishop Melvin Wheatley Jr., the Denver bishop known for his embroilment in gay rights controversies, is retiring this summer and will become a professor of pastoral ministry. Bishop Wheatley, 68, received the most criticism for his appointment in 1981 of the Rev. Julian Rush, an avowed homosexual, to St. Paul's Methodist Church in downtown Denver. Wheatley has been episocopal leader for 12 years of 110,000 Methodists in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Montana and part of Idaho. In September, he will become visiting professor of pastoral ministry at the School of Theology in Claremont, Calif. Wheatleys appointment of Rush in 1981 was so controversial that Colorado Methodists took the issue to the churchs judicial council, or supreme court. But the court ruled there was nothing in Methodist law to prohibit the ordination of gays. Hartmon Al Elder James M. Shaw, pastor of Mount Zion Church of God in Christ, not only wants small church to grow in numbers, but current members to mature as well. He has been pastor since April. His installation is scheduled Sunday at 3:30 p.m. church. While he was serving in the armed forces in Hawaii, the Rev. Mr. Shaw established a COGIC on the island of Oahu. Once he was out of the service, he returned to the mainland where he worked in Victorville, Calif. school he helped found. His wife was a nurse at Los Angeles General Hospital at that time. Today, she is the nurse in charge at a convalescent center in Ogden. Elder Shaw is pleased Bishop Jones appointed him to Mount Zion Church and he believes the change in assignment will do him good. Church attendance at Mount Zion is small, averaging only 12 members each Sunday. But Elder Shaw has big plans for the small church, pointing out it is the oldest COGIC in Utah, established in 1939. He plans on canvassing the area surrounding the building and visiting the Job Corp s nearby Hospitality House. They (Job Corp members) need the Gospel, Elder Shaw emphasizes. Theyre youngsters away from home and they need to know someone cares, he said. Elder Shaw graduated from the University of California at Dominquez Hills, with a bachelor's degree in liberal studies. He also received a teaching certificate. He taught school for 21 years in Victorville in grades from preschool through high school. He believes his years of teaching shows through in his style of ministry. In 1981 he came to conduct a revival at Finley Temple. Upon completion of the revival, he and his family decided to return. They arrived without employment and lived temporarily in the basement of the Finley Temple. I believed this was where God wanted me to be. Because of that I gave up my teaching position at the West Los Angeles Christian Academy, a h Since April, the church has already had one convert and has the prospect of another, Elder Shaw said. Its his opinion growth is a part of whatever a preacher does.
