Show The Salt Lake Tribune Saturday. June 2, 1SH4 A3 Jobless Rate Drops to 7.5 Percent WASHINGTON - (AP) Nearly Americans found jobs in May, pushing civilian unemployment down to 7 5 percent, the government reported Friday. An ebullient President Reagan hailed the "happy news" and noted that the jobless rate has returned to where it was when he took office "There are far more people working .. . because we have created millions of jobs to take care of the expanding work force, Reagan told reporters as he left the White House for an overseas trip that will include an international economic summit 900.000 in London The dramatic improvement, which evidently took many private economists by surprise, broke a string of three consecutive months of 7 8 percent civilian unemploy- ment. Translated into human terms, the 0.3 percentage point drop in the seasonally adjusted rate added people to the ranks of the employed, bringing the total number of people with jobs to a record 105.3 million. At the same time, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said the roster of those officially categorized as unemployed shrank from 8 84 million in April to 8.51 million a net decrease of nearly 330,000. Since joblessness hit a peak rate of 10.7 percent in November 1982, with more than 12 million out of work, total U.S. employment has soared by 6.3 million. These data provide a clear indication that the administrations policy based on our commitment to balanced and continuing economic growth is the right policy for now and the future, said Labor Secretary Raymond Donovan. Rudy Oswald, director of economic research at the AFL-CIsaid: I think that the unemployment rate that Ronald Reagan considered unacceptable as a candidate remains unacceptable today. But he also said, Increased employment is always desirable, and nobody can dispute that. But a companion survey of business payrolls, which is not used in the compilation of the unemployment rate, showed the addition of only 230,000 jobs. Seasonal adjustment of employment as well as unemployment is especially difficult at this time of year, Commissioner of Labor Statistics Janet L. Norwood told the congressional Joint Economic Committee. Employment usually increases as outdoor activities expand and large numbers of people enter the summer labor market. Norwood noted that the survey week was earlier than usual. The household survey conducted by the BLS and the Census Bureau is done in the week containing the 12th day of the month, and the 12th day of May was a Saturday. I think the rate is solid, said bureau anaiVst Deborah Klein. Weve had continued employment gains even while the rate was on a plateau at 7.8 percent in February, March and April, so we expected to have a decline in unemployment soon. The improvement touched every population group, but was strongest among adult men and women, and among blacks, whose rate fell from 16.8 percent to 15.8 percent. 60.000 - CHAia Reg. $209 Reg. $129 May.
