The Checkers, who captured the Adams Cup in 1982 and 1983, were fighting for their third consecutive league championship. I just want to thank God that they let us stay together, Oilers Coach Tom Webster said You are a helluva hockey team. The Oilers lost their home ice in Tulsa in February and almost folded, but Central Hockey League officials decided to keep the club together and have them play the rest of their schedule on the road. Mike Backman and Graeme Nicholson scored in the first period as the Oilers took a lead they never relinin quished. The Checkers made it the second period on a goal by Neal Coulter, but earlier failed to capitalize on a power play scoring opportunity when Ledyard and Backman were penalized for slashing. The Checkers' Red Laurence added a goal in the closing minutes of the final period in an unsuccessful comeback effort.
