Show 8A The Salt Lake Tribune Saturday, April 28, 1984 oodbury Dance Company offers eclectic evening of dance Ririe-- W By Helen Forsberg Tribune Staff Writer If one were to describe the Dance Companys spring concert in one word, eclectic might do the job. Mosaic, which opened Friday night at the Capitol Theatre, is one of those programs which combines just about everything into an evening of dance. For me the most impressive work of the evening was the one which closed the program, Donna Whites Future History." Miss White, a member of the company, has frequently had works produced at the University of Utah. This piece, however, is her first for and one which stands a good chance in remaining it Ks repertory. Ririe-Woodbu- Future History contains provocative movement, the success of the piece is not entirely due to the choreography. With sleek and abstract dance, Miss White has skillWhile Dance Review Though sometimes a more unified concert is more satisfying, this type of program does have its advantages. With such an assortment of works, you're almost sure to find one work, if not more, which will suit your fancy. fully combined contemporary props, stark lighting designs and an evocative sound score by Jon Hassell and Brian Eno. Altogether it makes an entrancing ritualistic dance, one which seeks total in volvement both from the dancers and the audience and one which receives it. ater piece, and one which works very well. The mood is bittersweet, as dancers, with the sounds of planes soaring, voices cracking and cars screeching in the distant background, wave joyfully, embrace desperately and turn away in sadness. An especially beautiful moment is the conclusion of Future History. Five dancers, led by a mysterious Diane Matsunaga, stand amid dim lights and create images evocative one minute of a crucifix and the next of a kachina doll. Artistic director Joan Woodbury also has created an effective work, though one might question if Departures could actually be described as a dance in and of itself. Mrs. Woodbury created the piece around a radio script of the same name by Utah playwright David Kranes and the words, in this case, are as important as the movement. . Shirley Riries premiere work, would do much better if it didnrt try to convey so many things. The piece is about high fashion model advertisements, cats and birds and though Mrs. Ririe has somehow tied the three together, the Its the Rage," 1 LEY? And the original sound score by Steve Koplowitz does little to clear up the confusion. Cliches which are supposed to be clever come out sounding silly and inane. Mrs. Riries solo work, based on a character, from Loa Mangelsons Cyclic Rites, is more effective both in drama and costuming. The all white costume for White Solo, designed by Loa Mangelson, is quite spectacular. It, in fact, is the crux of the piece, as Mrs. Ririe creates different images by removing each of its 16 layers.
