But home garden onions are usually raised from sets. Both sets and seeds are used to produce scallions, a popular name for young onions that are harvested before they have developed much of Andy sends ttie Star Wars Question and Answer Book About Space to Laura Dixon, 9, Montgomery, Ala., (or her question: Why does the onion make you cry? The onion is well known for its strong taste and odor. The odor is due to a mildly stimulating oil. This oil readily forms into a vapor, which can escape into the air when the onion is cut or peeled. But onions also grow in most of the other states and in the Canadian provinces Mexico, Italy and Spain are noted for the high quality of their onions. An onion plant is a biennial, which means that it lives for two years The upper part of the plant is a set of leaves growing inside of each other. The lower parts of the leaves become very thick. The flowers are small and white, and grow in rounded clusters. The bulbs are enclosed in a thin papery covering made up of dried outer leaves. The onion plant also has a few shallow roots. Onions come in all sizes, colors and shapes. There are two general classifications, however: American onions, which are strong, and foreign onions, which are very mild. The strong type includes the Yellow Globe types and the flatter type. The home gardener can grow these from sets, which are very small onions that have not completed their growth. These onions keep well and they are usually eaten cooked. The foreign type are mostly Bermuda and Spanish onions. These large, mild onions are generally eat- By Paul Nichols 1 Onions arent particularly high in vitamins or in energy value. Cats and finesses have something in common. There is more than one way to skin them. Consider this hand. The bidding was short and to the point. Once North had showed a hand that was just below opening bid strength. South knew where he wanted to play the hand. He wasted no time getting there. West led the jack of hearts, and declarer devised a reasonable plan. He won in hand and drew trumps in two rounds, ending in dummy. Then he tried the club finesse. That failed and a heart came back, won on the table. Now declarer tried his club break. a next line Had that materialized, declarer would have been able to discard one of dummy's diamonds on his fourth club, and the slam would have been home. Unfortunately, clubs were However, declarer was not yet done. He crossed to the board with a trump and tried a diamond finesse. Alas, that also failed down one. All in all. declarer adopted a line that stood about an 85 percent chance of success. But he could have done even 4 2. better. Declarer should ignore the club finess if East has the king, declarer can do as well by leading clubs up to his hand twice without finessing. He should win the king of hearts, cash the ace of clubs and cross to the ace of hearts. After ruffing a heart high, declarer should draw two rounds of trumps, ending on the table, and then lead a club toward his hand. If East produces the king, the slam is safe. If East plays low, declarer inserts the queen. Should that win, declarer returns to dummy and leads another club toward his hand. As the cards lie. the queen of clubs loses to the king, but declarer scores his slam because of his extra chance. West is out of clubs, and he must either lead a diamond into declarer's tenace or else yield a ruff a sluff by return ing a heart. Have you been running into double trouble?
