Show 16B The Salt Lake Tribune Friday, March 23, 1984 Plans Being Finalized to Commission Plans are being finalized to commission The Salt Lake City, the U.S. atNavys newest nuclear-powere- d tack submarine. The ship will carry on a tradition originally fostered by the heavy cruiser USS Salt Lake City that participated in a number of Pacific Ocean exercises during World War II. That ship earned 11 battle stars. She was deactivated at wars end and has since been used atomic as a test vessel for post-wa- r bomb experiments. Utah state, federal and city offi USS Salt cials were invited to attend the May 12 commissioning at Newport News, Va., during a Jan. 26 dinner by Secretary of the Navy John Lehman. Gov. and Mrs. Scott M. Matheson and Mayor and Mrs. Ted L. Wilson are expected to attend along with mow Lake City officials of area contractors whose firms produced equipment for the ship. Persons interested in attending or participating should contact the Navy Recruiting Processing Station at 640 E. 400 South.
