Show State Decides Drivers License F orins Records Classified Will Remain as Hart Biased NBC, Mudd Seem Against 4B The Salt Lake Tribune IVlesifion 1 March Saturday, li, 1984 are Drivers license application interview that Mudd unleashed at Hart Tuesday night. Rude and crude, composed entirely of hostile questions, it ended with Mudd asking Hart. "Will you do your Teddy Kennedy imitation for me now ?" Even after 240 viewers telephoned NBC to complain about Mudd's manner. Mudd still does not seem to realize how spiteful he sounded while he was attacking Hart. "It is strange, he contended, that when a reporter asks a U.S. senator hard, sharp questions, it becomes news. By Lee Winfrey of Newspapers Knight-Ridde- r If the political correspondents on network television were assessed and ranked like Democratic presidential candidates. Roger Mudd would be classified as the biggest disappointment of the primary races so far. Mudd is doing better than the four candidates who have dropped out of the Democratic race, since he still carries the title of chief political correspondent" for NBC. But so far. his work rates no higher accolade than that of Ohio Sen. John Glenn and the Rev. Jesse Jackson, two Democratic contenders who have yet to win a primary. This has been a hard season for political pundits of all kinds, both in print and on the little screen, so it would be unfair to say that Mudd has lost his touch. But he looks rusty so far, not yet back in stride after taking six months off from polities. Clanking and Clunking Like Achilles at Troy, Mudd sulked in his tent from last September, when he was dropped as of The NBC Nightly News," until last month, when he donned his armor again less than two weeks before the New Hampshire primary. So far, though, he is clanking and clunking, not skewering and scoring. It's easy to forgive Mudd for saying, on Feb. 28, that Colorado Sen. Gary Hart was not geared for what's ahead" in this week's Super Tuesday primaries. Plenty of other experts didnt think Hart would win three of the five primaries Tuesday. But there is no excuse for the kind NBC President Calls It Quits NEW YORK (UPI) - Robert E. Mulholland, president of the National Broadcasting Company Inc., announced his resignation Friday, said. Mulholland's resignation came a week before NBC planned to announce a management reorganization, an NBC spokesman said. No successor was named. As president of NBC, Mulholland was responsible for the NBC television and radio network as well as its news and sports operations. He reported directly to NBC Chairman Grant Tinker. Mulholland, 50, joined NBC as a newswriter in Chicago in 1961. He held a variety ef positions with NBC prior to becoming president of the television network in 1977. He was named to his present position in NBC 1981. 1 But the interview did not come across to a viewer as merely tough questioning. It sounded venomous and it looked unfair. It looked like a vain reporter trying to enhance his reputation at the expense of a man who had done nothing to him to justify such rancor. It seemed as if Mudd were attempting to duplicate his greatest triumph of recent years, the 1979 interview in which he made Sen. Ted Kennedy look uncertain, unprepared. and unfit to be president. But where Mudds Kennedy interview was deft, his Hart interview was dumsv. The Mudd-Halow point of M Channel 1 .
