Show 10A The Salt Lake Tribune Saturday, JVlarchliJiitJ Symphonys all -- Russian evening By Paul Wetzel Tribune Staff Writer It's been quite a month for Russian music in these parts, what with the Soviet Emigre Orchestra's Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky in Ogden, the Utah Symphony's Prokofiev (selections from the "Romeo and Juliet suites) under guest conductor Yoel Levi, and the Cleveland Orchestras Tchaikovsky Fourth Symphony under Eschenbach Wednesday night. The Utah Symphony contributed further to this informal festival by serving up an program Friday night, though one which was considerably more diverse than the fare which originally had been announced for these concerts. The Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto was retained from that earlier program, but it was surrounded by the Over ture from Kabalevsky's opera "Colas Breugnon" (1937) and the Rachmaninoff Symphony No. 2. Guest conductor Walter llendl presided, and Romanian Mihaela Martin, winner of last year's International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, was soloist in the concerto. Miss Martin gave a performance of the Tchaikovsky concerto which was not overpowering in its virtuosity but stressed instead the score's lyric sweetness. Her rendition of the first movement was rather deliberate in terms of tempo, and her phrasing was unsually relaxed, particularly in the early going. Some passages seemed to drag a bit. in fact, but as the movement developed the tempos picked up to a more typical pace. The interpretation really came into its own in the singing second movement, where the soloist pro duced beautifully connected lines of delicate music. In marked contrast to the first movement. Miss Martin look the finale at a brisk clip, playing gracefully and without any sign of technical stress. She alto employed some interesting rubato. which seemed to catch conductor and orchestra on a number of occasions. In fact, this performance as a whole could not be called a smooth collaborative effort. The orchestra often sounded tentative, perhaps in part because Mr. Hendl kept orchestral dynamics small so as not to overwhelm the solo voice. loured dynamic shapes and tasteful rubato which are most persuasive in this music. That is not to say that this performance was the last word in interpretation of this symphony. The conclusion of the first movement, for example, failed to develop its accustomed fire, and this performance would win few awards for textural transparency and detail. But the scherzo, which is arguably this sym LE7 lLpes flat-foote- d phony's most interesting movement, was persuasively set out in a reading which in turn combined bristling energy, warm lyricism and a plucky march sequence. The adagio was given the kind of dreamy, romantic treatment which allows its gorgeous melodies to blossom fully, and the violin lines. The program opened with a of bright, vigorous, clean readingemthe Kabalevsky overture. The on phasis was squarely placed on factor the rhythmic vitality, which this piece lives or dies, and in this case the music not only lived, it finale featured some lovely soaring thrived.
