Malan Tribune Sports Writer A flip of the coin here, a playoff there, a quick look to the rule book and finally the 1983 high school football playoffs will be just about ready to kick off. For all except the teams in Class where the state playoffs already have begun, the regular season came to a wild conclusion Thursday night. Six of the 10 regions that wrapped up league play ended in some surt of tie that demanded either a flip of a coin or some type of playoff to determine their tournament representatives. What it all meant was that coaches. administrators, Utah High School Activities Association officials and the media spent Friday trying to sort it all out. And, even when most of the dust had settled, the picture still wasnt perfectly clear. For example, in the Class field of 16. five clubs are waiting to see just who they will play, or if they'll play at all. and it all hinges on one game, a Wednesday meeting between Cedar City and Spanish Fork The Redmen. who competed in Class Southern Division of Redefeat the Dons, who must Ten, gion finished in third place in Ficgion Eight, to qualify for the state tournament. If Coach Dave Jenson's club does that, the Redmen will play Judge Memorial Saturday and the Dons will slip into Region Eight's fourth-placslot, bumping Carbon out of the tournament an setting up 3-- (Quarterfinals) Friday's Games 3 102 ev Brva"l 1 3 -'j6 5v 8 V J B Cjomt W 5 4 Baro Russet1 16 36 85 11 4 i? Fork-Jorda- first-roun- n d Spanish Fork victory Wednesday would mean that the Dons would open the tournament at Judge Memorial and Carbon would have to face Jordan. A d Now, that's clear, isnt it? The thing that obviously worries Cedar's Jenson is how his team will fair against the competition. The Redmen played two oppo- nents during their season, losing to American Fork, 21-and defeatAlthough Payson ing Payson, 32-had just one victory this season, the Lions did take Spanish Fork into four overtimes before succumbing, 2 36-3- Actually, we've played better teams than the against the smaller schools, Jenson explained. It seems like the kids know that they have to get better prepared for the bigger schools and they go out 3-- and do it. "You know it's hard to play down (against smaller schools). Butl think we re ready Certainly it hurt us not to play against that competition all year, but we've had a good year and I think we're capable of staying w ith . them " It took a coin flip Friday in Retie gion Seven to break a three-wa- y for second place. And when was jt over, Provo was given the second- - place berth, American Fork the No spot and Orem No. 4 The Bulldogs will open the tournament Friday by hosting Ogden, while American Fork will be at Ben Lomond. The Tigers travel to Tremonton to meet Region Five champion Bear River While coins were flipping in Utah County, Davis County had a toss-of- f of its own Bountiful. Viewmont and Woods Cross each finished the Rerecords gion Four season with and tied for third place. As the coin flipping went, Viewmont was given the fourth-plac- e berth, while Bountiful will play Woods Cross Tuesday at 3 30 p m. at Viewmont in an elimination game. The winner of (he playoff will face Alta in the opening round of the tournament. Viewmont is already preparing for a Friday meeting with second-ranke- d Hillcrest. One of the two Region Four games Bountiful was able to win was an impressive victory last week over the Wildcats But the ease of that victory actually his Bountiful Coach Kim I'eterson more worried than confident. Really, beating them by that much is going to put the psychological edge in their favor," Ieterson said. Thats often the way its is in athletics A team like theirs that got beat in that kind of game really gets pumped up, while team like ours 3 3-- 3 40-1- 2 starts wonder. How did we do that ' It's going to be a very physical contest which will hurt either team that wins in the first round of the tournament " Another thing that has Feterson worried is how his team will rebound from an emotional loss Thursday night against cross town rival Viewmont That's another thing The kids fought hard and they had the opportunities to win that game, right down to the end It s alwavs a down when you lose that kind of game, but I told the kids that it's going to be a tremendous psvc hologital challenge to play Woods Cross again and it's going to be a psychological challenge to come back from that loss. I think the game will come down to emotional pitch and making adjustments The teams that is able to get emotionally prepared and make the needed adjustments (from the last game) will win," Feterson predicted. There was also a three-watie for third place in Region Two. where Bingham, Taylorsville and Brighton each finished with a record The Warriors earned the third-plactournament berth, their first trip to the state playofN. on the basis of regular seiison irtones over 3-- e both the Miners and the Bengals Although the Miners ow n a victory 21-- ever the defending '! He champions Coach Jerry Fiat s nub will have to beat the Bengals again Tuesday at Brighton at 3 p m to earn the fourth and final berth from the r gnu That See Fage'C-4- , Column I |
