Asked why he didnt let Vaughan get the record that day, Curtice explained, I looked across the field at the poor old coach (Buck Shaw) suffering there and I just couldnt run the score up on his team. As far as the record goes, we can throw that shovel pass to Stuart all afternoon against the Aggies next week so I wanted to leave a challenge for the team and Stuart. And the Academy is just getting its football program started and the Air Force will be a natural rival in the years to come. Im looking to the future schedules, Cactus Jack answered. And in retrospect, Coach Curtice couldnt have been wrong on more suppositions when he tried to explain his substitution. In the first place, the Academy bought out the final three years of Shaws contract and Ben Martin was the Falcon coach and Ray Nagel was coaching the Utes w'hen they met the next year at Colorado Springs. Curtice had left after that 1957 season for Stanford. Secondly, the Utah Aggies did not allow Grosscup to complete the passes for the record that Vaughan wanted so badly, and only the running of Merrill Douglas enabled the Utes to eke out a close victory over the Aggies. And, lastly, Curtices kindness to the Air Force meant nothing in the immediate scheduling, since 25 years elapsed between games SpOFtS gait fak t tribune 1983 Page 1 Utes, Poor On Road, Visit AFA By John Mooney Tribune Sports Editor AIR FORCE ACADEMY The University of Utah football team may be likened to Gen Robert E. The Falcons, despite a narrow loss to Wyoming and a drubbing at the hands of Brigham Youngs awe- some aerial circus, were rated a favorite to hand the Utes their fourth loss and their third in WAC play. Coaches have mixed feelings on running up the score, depending largely on whether the pasting is being administered by or to their players. But while coaches are concerned with the feelings of their rival coaches, they overlook certain other groups with feelings, too. First, there are the substitutes who have worked hard all year and deserve the chance to play before their parents, girlfriends, wives and friends. On the other hand, the fans pay their muney to see the team play, and sometimes substituting or running plays into the line turns a thrilling offensive showing into Dullsville. Consider, too, the starters, who may deserve a laugher after being used exclusively against tough opponents in struggles most of the season. Maybe they would have fun playing in a game in which they could relax and win easily- Also to be considered are the players who are battling for national honors. players do not make all their reputations against tough opponents, exclusively. I mention frequently that Babe Ruth didnt hit his 60 homers in a season, or 714 career home runs, against just Hall of Fame pitchers. Lastly, sometimes a coach feels humiliated in a loss if it is obvious his rival is pulling his punches to hold down the scoring. And, as a final comment, sometimes when an opponent is outclassed, it is more merciful to leave the tiring regulars in the game than to put in the fresh and eager subs who are trying to make the first team. There are so many angles involved in running up a score, Im glad I dont have to make the decision on substituting. In fact, In retrospect, Im glad I wasnt a good enough football player to be tempted into coaching. This job is tough enough, trying to get a majority of a few hundred thousand potential readers to agree, without the threat of losing a job if you guess wrong too frequently. Observation Wait! Id be satisfied if Congress would cease pouring it on the taxpayers every time it meets. Hansen Sets Record as Eagles Win By Roger Graves Tribune Sports Writer In the mirror of his mind, this is the night Salt Lake center Richie Hansen will forever remember and forever cherish. Friday, October 21, 1983 in Salt Lake City. The Richard Hansen night erased one of the longest standing Central Hockey League records e Cenwhile becoming the tral Hockey League scoring champion before an exuberant, appreciative gathering at the Salt Palace. Sure, the Golden Eagles got their first home victory of the 1983-8- 4 season by striking for four third-perio- d goals to ring up a 3 triall-tim- umph over Colorado Friday evening. Sure, 1980 U.S. Olympic hero Jim Craig got his first professional victory in goal since the 1981-8- 2 season and his first W since joining Salt Lake. Sure, Finland native Jali Wahlsten got his initial two goals of the season to spark a spirited Golden Eagle comeback. Sure, Salt Lake shed its el foldo tendency loswhile snapping a three-gam- e ing streak. But this was Richie Hansens night, a night to savor for the eight-yea- r CHL veteran and his father, Max, who mysteriously showed up at the Salt Palace to give his son a bearish embrace when Richie third-perio- d equaled Norm Dennis record. Richie had no idea his father was flying in from New York for the occasion. In fact, his dad even telephoned Hansen Friday and asked him about the weather and such Utah intricacies to make certain Richie expected long-standi- nothing. "I had absolutely no idea he was going to be here, admitted a jubilant Hansen. He used to do that when I was playing junior hockey. Hed just pop in and pop out. I get pumped up when hes in the building, and I was happy to see him tonight. But I was surprised. I wouldnt miss this for the world, chimed in Max Hansen, who saw Salt Lake skate in its road uniforms to break its three-gam- e losing streak at home. Hansen, an intelligent operative in his eight year in the CHL and his fourth season with Salt Lake, equaled Dennis record of 497 career points after accepting a crisp pass from Craig Homola to beat Colorado goalie Mike Vernon from the right slot on the power play at 9.41 of the third period. The goal, which brought down the house and brought Max Hansen onto the ice out of nowhere to personally congratulate his son, also helped the Golden Eagles erase a 1 deficit entering the final 20 minutes to seize control. Wahlsten, the Finnish rookie who hadn't registered a goal or an assist in Salt Lakes initial four games, ignited the comeback with a slap-shgoal from the right circle at 5:54 of the third period and scored again 24 minutes later on a slap shot from the slot following a picture pass from linemate Terry Tait. k bullets Wahlstens elevated Salt Lake to a 2 advantage. Hansen then struck for his fifth goal of the year and the rd-tying marker to stretch the Golden Eagle lead to However, Colorados Bruce Eakin hushed the crowd with his sixth goal of the year with only 1:15 left to pull the Flames back into contention at That set the table for a perfect conclusion to Hansens memoraot And what about ff 20-fo- back-to-bac- 3-- reco- 4-- 2. 4-- 3. ble, day and I did a lot of tossing and turning last night in bed. With the Flames pulling Vernon in favor of a sixth forward, Hansen deftly slid the puck into an empty net from near the red line with only 10 seconds remaining to eclipse the e CHL scoring record with his 165th goal and 498th point in the all-tim- CHL. Til take that one at the end, even if it was an empty-netter,- " beamed Hansen, who has now amassed 89 goals and 182 assists in a Golden Eagle uniform. Im kind of happy to get it (the record) over with. Ive been thinking about it all that record-tyin- g goal? I got the pass from Homola and came into the slot, reviewed Hansen. I didnt know if I was close enough to put it by him (Colorados Vernon). I just tried to put it on net and it went right through his legs. I was happy to see it go in because I had missed on a couple of other chances. I don't think it (pursuing the record) was bothering him, opined Golden Eagle Coach J.P. Parise, who revealed he will come back with Craig in the nets Saturday when Salt Lake hosts Colorado in a 7:30 p.m. Salt Palace rematch. Richies really been working hard and Im very happy to see him get the record. Its really exciting for him and for the team. Dont think there wasnt a lot of pressure on everyone tonight, said Craig, who collected 29 saves while helping the beleaguered Golden Eagle defense (only four defensemen were in uniform Friday) overcome a barrage of Colorado shots in the closing three minutes of the game. The defense played a great game and everybody on the team is happy to see Richie get the record tonight. 31-2- Crucial to the Falcon hopes is quarterback Marty Louthan, supposedly recovered after taking a hard hit in a 5 victory over Tex-as-Paso last week. Louthan leads the WAC in scoring with nine touchdowns in six games and hes passed for another score. It was Louthan who engineered that drive in the final minutes to snatch a victory from BYU at Provo a year ago. He runs the flex version of the wishbone offense to perfection, is a fine pitch man on the option, a good runner and a workmanlike passer. Louthan also has a top runner in Tom Brown and a plunging fullback in John Kershner. The Falcon defense has been suspect, though. In total defense, the Academy ranks eighth in the WAC, yielding 424.8 yards a game, 212 3 rushing and 212.5 passing. However, the Falcons rank second in the WAC in allowing opponents scores, giving up an average of 21.3 points a game. To use a cliche, they bend, apparently, but dont break. Utah is fourth in total defense, yielding 340 9 yards on the average, 121.1 to running plays and 219.7 to passing. Utah has given up 22.9 points a game. In total offense, the Air Force is 11th nationally and Utah 21st. The Falcons are seventh nationally and first in the WAC in rushing offense, while Utah is 19th nationally and third in the WAC. Air Force has d rushed for a average and Utah for 239 yards. However, Utah's running game may be adversely affected by the absence of regular fullback Danny Tarver, who will be out for the second week in a row due to a knee injury he suffered in the UTEP game. Hilria Johnson will start. Utahs offensive showing through the air lanes against Wyoming boosted the Utes into fifth place in d WAC passing with a average to the Falcons 139.3 average. 7 avBut the Air Force has a erage advantage in scoring. e Both have winning streaks, with the Falcons winning at the expense of Navy and UTEP, and the Utes beating UTEP and Wyo37-2- 293-yar- Aggies Risk PCAA Hopes at UNLV By Ray Herbat Tribune Sports Writer LAS VEGAS Utah States still-aliv- e PCAA title hopes receive a severe test here Saturday as UniversiVegas plays a rare ty of Nevada-La- s afternoon game (2 p.m. MDT), hosting the Aggies in the Silver Biowl. In beating Boise State, 10-last 16,000 7, weekend, the Aggie offense sputtered much of the game, and Coach Chris Pella blames a lack of blocking, by both the line and backs, as the reason for the offensive problems. "We still feel our offensive schemes are effective, said Pella, "but we n5d to do a better job of execution dnd blocking." Concerning UNLV, the No. 1 offensive team in the PCAA, Pella says: They are a very explosive team. They show excellent speed in their skill positions and they are capable of beating you in a lot of different ways.
