Show TV Salt Lake Tribw Saadi y, Jly T5 24, 1983 Santa Barbaras full of charm, warmth, energy by Tom and Joanne OToole SnU Barbara steps down the foothills of the Santa Ynex Mountains and meets the Pacific Ocean along the calmest stretch of the California coastline. A community of about 70,000 with another 100,000 in surrounding areas, it is 90 miles north of Los Angeles, and 335 miles south of San Franciso. Long before it achieved fame as President Reagan's home away from home, it was sought after by the famous and wealthy for its Mediterranean climate, hot sulpher springs, and elegant reputation. Only the most jaded of visitors could resist the charm, warmth, and energy of beautiful Santa Barbara. It is blessed with a rich Spanish history, plentiful sightseeing, a winding country backroads that allow curious visitors to meander at a leisurely pace, delightful inns, marvelous restaurants, luxury guest ranches, and the sweet smells of Juniper and Spruce. Need we say more? Although first sighted and claimed the Spain in 1542, it wasnt until 1602 when another Spanish ship anchored off the coast on SL Barbaras feastday that the ships chaplain gave the channel and mainland its name. Military Outpost In 1782 the Spanish returned to establish a military outpost called the Presidio Real (royal fortress). The fort and the mission that soon followed set the style of the town, and by the end of the century the first Tom and Joanne OToole are freelance writers living in Wkkliffe, Ohio. adobe houses with red tiled roofs appeared. The town flourished until 1925 when a massive earthquake destroyed most of it When the city was rebuilt its Spanish flavor was retained and new stucco structures with red tiled roofs reappeared. The architecture is accented by wrought iron balconies and lampposts, ar- caded loggias, intricate paseos (walkways), and splashing fountains. The city provides two highly traveled sightseeing routes every new visitor should follow. The scenic drive covers 15 main points of interest, and ambles through the center of town, historic sights, beach area, and luxurious residential neighborhoods, developing a flavor of the community. Since five of the highlights of the drive are in the downtown, these can be saved for the Red Tile Walking Tour." Essential Stop well-mark- Its almost essential to stop and n visit the two most spots on the scenic drive Mission Santa Barbara and Stearns Wharf. The tenth of 21 missions built by Father Junipero Serra and his Franciscan followers. On weekends art exhibits and craft shows dot the area. exStearns Wharf is a three-bloc- k tension of the citys main street over the ocean. More than a century old, the sturdy pier has been renovated to the tune of 86 million and is now home for 14 shops, restaurants, seafood market, a tackle shop, and a small museum. The Wharfs colorful history has weathered heavy surf, a devastating tornado, fires, and financial difficulties, but with its reopening two years ago the old landmark achieved immediate success. Just beyond the wharf an armada of bright, colorful sails loom up, and pleasure craft skim across the harbor dodging the whitecaps. Scenic Drive The scenic drive continues past historic homes, museums, and zoological gardens, allowing tourists a choice of sights. However, the heart of the community and its history is in the picture postcard downtown, and a red tile path walks you through Santa Barbaras past and present quite easily. The centerpiece is the famous Santa Barbara County Courthouse, a Spanish-Mooris- h castle covering an entire square block. A timeless masterpiece, the beautiful white structure is capped by a high clock tower and observation deck. A tour of the courthouse displays its bandpainted ceiling murals and classic Spanish decor. The gardens and grounds surrounding it are lovely, and there aren't any keep off the grass signs. Actually in neighboring Montecito, the low, rambling two-stor-y hotel of white stucco walls and red tile rooftops is a harmonious blend of Spanish, Moorish, and Portuguese design, retaining all the ambiance of the 20s. We found the young man running the line aloof, and surprisingly forgetful of his patrons many of whom stalked off at being treated indifferently, and others who voiced their dissatisfaction at waiting or having you to the Presidio which was part of the original fortress and barracks, into a number of adobe homes built by leading citizens of the early 1800s, to Plaza De la Guerra (site of the first city hall), down Presidio Avenue (the oldest street), and into the Presidio Gardens. Old World Charm After touring the Casa De la Guerra, home of the commandante of the Presidio, you can relax at El Paseo, a shopping arcade reminiscent of Old Spain. The Old World charm of its shops, galleries, and restaurants shouldnt be missed. The city is snuggled between a spectacular curving coastline and the grandeur of the encircling mountains, with famed El Cammo Real cutting through the center of town. The Spanish words God gave us the land, but the people made the carved over the courthouse city portals seems to underscore the enchantment of this little community. There seems to be a charm which comes about so effortlessly. For visitors staying in Santa Barbara for a while, there are many types of accommodations. The visitors bureau directory lists eight bed and breakfast spots which might be a pleasant change of pace. There are also more traditional (and elegant) choices for a longer stay.
