Show 8W The Salt Lake Tribune Sunday, July 24, 1983 Volunteering professional informations superfluous By Joyce Lain Kennedy Dear Joyce: Im 39, a widow, free to travel and very presentable. And 'Im at the end of my rope looking for work. I have a B.A. (bachelor of !arts) degree and .M.A. (master of 'arts) degree and ,J.D. (law) degree but little experi- ence. I want to get into business. Ive mailed 200 j I plus resumes to major companies1 with no result. Apparently employers feel that Im overqualified and likely to want to move on. Im now tempted to delete the J.D. from my resume. Is it wrong G.B. to omit such information? A. It is not wrong to omit mention of your law degree and depending on the job for which you are applying, volunteering that you hold the credential may even be superfluous, says Jeffrey G. Allen, author of "How To Turn an Interview into a Job (Simon & Schuster). Not only is Allen a lawyer and your age, 39, but he is a former recruiter and personnel manager. Jeffrey Allen advises many employment services and is the general counsel to the California Association of Personnel Consultants. The placement favors the do I. To trim-the-f- at illustrate, attorney clearly approach. So suppose you are ap- plying for a job as an investment counselor. Suppose further that you studied in a summer opera workshop. Would you feel compelled to burst into song during the interview? No. For the same reason you need not bring up the fact that you hold a law degree if you are discussing a job for which the education is irrelevant. You are not applying for a security clearance you only want a job. Focus your skills precisely on the job you seek. Lying is another matter. If you are asked to state the highest educational level you have attained, you must mention your J.D. degree. Still, as Jeffrey Allen astutely advises, you can downplay the credential that is knocking you out of the running by adding a phrase such as, Am not licensed to practice or Do not intend to apply for bar A broader caution: Beware of giving a spurious answer to any kind of question in an employment interview, despite erroneous advice to fudge facts, as one recent article in a womens magazine put it. To combat discriminatory questions aimed at learning the number and ages cf a female applicants chil dren, the magazine listed tactics that included saying the children live with their grandparents during the week and come home on weekends. Changing the husbands occuwas pation to make him home-base- d another suggestion. Apart from ethics, this kind of advice is risky. The potential reprisal if your lie is caught is trouble nobody needs. Neither should you invite a look at your warts. g Here is a rule with which many feel comfortable: When it helps your cause to reveal a fact, do so in glowing detail. When it does not, keep the information in your pocket unless it conceals an impediment that would keep you from doing a fine job. When asked a sticky question, briefly give the facts and add language that softens the blow. (Yes, my children are young but I have reliable child fortunately care and I am very committed truth-in-tellin- my to career.) READER NOTE: Tolkinfl mo.MV at wort? KL-717- KC-717- KA-717- i But for others, raiirexier here is the dia- mond seed chart, with a few explanations. Represents One Stitch On this, or on any other graph chart for knitting, each square of the graph represents one stitch. Usually the various symbols represent colors to be used for that stitch. Here, however, each symbol denotes a stitch that is purled on the right side or knitted on the worng side on a stockinette background. To work this pattern, cast on a multiple of 8 stitches plus I. Or to put it another way, cast on any number of stitches that can be evenly divided by eight and then cast on one more. To work Row 1 and all other odd numbered rows read the chart from right to left. Starting at point A, purl the first stitch (represented by a dark circle on the chart). Knit the next 7 stitches (represented by blank squares). You will now have worked 8 stitches, ending with the stitch just above the B on the chart. Now, go back to point A Learn to knit by chart with the diamond seed pattern. To try your hand at working from a graph chart, cast on 33 stitches and work the first 16 rows of the chart. If you want just a band of diamond seed as a border, you should then work Row 17 and work the balance of your project in plain stockinette. But, if you want an overall diamond pattern, start over at Row 1 and repeat Rows 1 through 16 as often as needed. When your piece is the desired length, end with Row 17. and repeat the stitches from A to B all across the row. When you reach the end of the row, you should have 1 stitch remaining on the left needle. Work this stitch as a purl stitch as shown by the symbol just above the letter C. Even Numbered Rows To work Row 2 and all other read the even numbered rows chart from left to right.
