Lifestyle tribune Saturday, June Section 25, 1983 A Page 8 A fashion explosion By Carolyn Monson Tribune Fashion Editor There has PHILADELPHIA been little sunshine in Philadelphia, site of press previews of fall and winter fashions for men, but sunglasses received a warm reception just the same. - In fact, sunglasses were the stars d of a presentation, the work of C. A. Leon Hall, recognized star-studde- as the foremost producerdirector of fashion shows in the industry. Ray-Ba- n Sunglasses by Bausch & Lomb and Avirex Ltd. fashions were shown Broadway style in dance numbers choreographed by Lawrence R. Leritz, who has danced on Broadway, in movies and on television, along with other dancers Lisa Embs, Karen Harvey, Jerry Mitchell and John De Luca. Sunglasses, Clothing The sunglasses, one pair of 14 karat gold, sells for $1,890, and the clothing were shown, in dance numbers from No, No Nanette," Cats and Chicago." Sunglass fashions take on a whole hew look when theyre worn by a tap dancer. Sunglasses and leather looks were also a part of the Mens Fashion A- ssociations sportswear seminar. This presentation, however, tended to focus more on the clothing than on the people showing them. Still, an hour of young men models wearing the best of fall and winter 83 sportswear certainly has its pleasant side. Fashion Phenomenon MFA executive director, Norman Karr, noted that sportswear is a modern fashion phenomenon that has developed into a new and thriving industry since the late 40s. There has been a great increase in leisure time and consequently in our recreational activities, Karr said, and sportswear design has not only kept pace but at times anticipated the new interests arid fanaticisms. Explosive! is the description he used for the new sportswear, concluding that, When you have an explosion, you are bound to have a Shearling, aniline leather, suede are combined for jacket, pants, sweater. boom. if Chip Tolbert, MFA fashion director, emphasized that, The sports- wear boom continues for fall 83 due to the astonishing number of innovative ideas, which he divided into severvsegments: Dramatic Suedes 1. Dramatic and directional suedes and leathers; 2. Beautifully colored outspoken outerwear, 3. Cool weather components; 4. Dynamite denims; 5. Sportswear tailored with a twist; 6. knockout knits; and 7. Fair Isle sweaters. Tolbert said that news is also being made by sweater vests, actionwear and active shirts. Tolbert noted that for the first time in many seasons attention is focused on rugged, outdoor sport shirtings, better known as the lumberjack shirt. When they are layered. he said, they not only create fashion excitement and have a real warmth factor but also allow a man Henry Grethel created burly tweed signature sweaters with layer upon an option in addition to his favorite sweater. To illustrate his point, Tolbert suggests a bold plaid shirt layerd over a neatly patterned button-dow- n shirt topped off with a woven patterned silk scarf. Designers have also experimented with multi-fabri- c pullover shirts that take on an avant garde attitude when unusual neck treatments and detailings are added. New sport shirt ideas shown include a fleece-backe- d sweatshirt fabric teamed with quilted corduroy, soft thamuis cluth and knitted fabric combined with color blocking to create a handsome design of knit and canvas.
