Show Place to Find Relationship With Christ Potters House Minister Reaches Out By Melinda Sowerby Tribune Staff Writer The Rev. Michael Webb believes all religions give members a sense of satisfaction. The thing Christianity offers its members others cannot is a "personal, intimate relationship with Jesus Christ. Mr. Webb hopes to provide the unchurched of Salt Lake City with a place to find that kind of relationship with Jesus Christ through the "Potters House, Christian Centre 341 E. 2100 South. minister began The the Potters House about 10 months ago because he felt the Lord was leading him to start a church in Sait Lake City. But the young minister emphasizes, were not here to be just another church in the valley. Instead, Mr. Webb wants to reached the "unsaved those who are down and out and are looking for the answers. He said even though there are many congregations in the Salt Lake area there are still not enough churches to reach all the needy people. We havent even scratched the surface. Name Reflects Goals The name, Potters House reflects Mr. Webbs goals. He said that Jeremiah 18 speaks of coming to the "potters house to hear my word. The name has been used within the fellowship the center is affiliated with which has about 150 churches mainly in the western United States, but also in Europe, Australia, Guam and the Philippines. Its our vision to reach the whole world, Mr. Webb said. Reaching the unchurched in Salt Lake City is as much a factor of location as anything. Mr. Webb said he felt good about the area when they moved the Potters House into the 2100 South, 300 East area. He said the centrally located building draws foot traffic in. In addition, he has put out flyers and posters and has put notices in the weekly newspapers. But the Potters House, has received most members through word of mouth. And his congregation of about 25 people is made up of mostly of young people. "Although we do have a lady 79 and one 85, Mr. Webb said. Of the young people, some have had run ins with the law or have been involved in drugs or alcohol. "One gation to start their own churches. Mr. Webb was born in Tucson, Ariz., and raised a Mormon. After talking, ing with Mr. Webb's wife, she laid down her tranquilizers and hasnt taken one since. Its been over a Mr. Webb said, adding a month, doctor had said she would have to be put into the hospital because her withdrawal symptoms would be so bad, but she told me she's still waiting for the withdrawal pain. Mr. Webb attributes her recovery from drugs to her new found faith. He said the Bible states that in the last days, young people will be touched by the Bible and with 80 of the people he reaches being 35 and under, he has tried to schedule movies and concerts to attract that age group. rock band. The bass (guitar) player the band I was working with became a Christian and there was a dramatic difference in him after he became a Christian. He finally left the group, Mr. Webb said. That bass player began playing in to Unchurched Before he was saved, he rarely read the Bible. ' I d gel to the part in Genesis w here they said Adam lived 900 years and I'd think what a fairytale' but after I was saved, the Bible came alive,"he said for a Christian group and Mr. Webb went to hear the group one night, 'll was the first time I'd heard the Gospel preached and I was saved that very night. It gave me new hope and new desires and set me free from alcohol and drugs. Others put all their energy toward their families, careers or education, but found that wasnt satisfying either. Nothing can fill the emptiness of the human heart or give real satisfaction like Jesus Christ, Mr. Webb said. The Potters House is an offshoot of the Foursquare Gospel Ministry, Mr. Webb said. The Potters House was begun in the late 1960s to appeal to the young people of that time, Mr. Webb said. With beginnings in Prescott, Ariz., the Potters House used the disciple-shi- p system to build churches. Peowho had been saved and were ple members of the Potters House, were sent to other cities to get a new church started. As a minister of the fellowship, Mr. Webb sees his duty to equip his congregation for the ministry and to get the entire congregation involved. Mrs. Thompson has had a varied career in community relations, personnel and teaching. But for a number of years she has devoted her full time to healing through prayer. First Congregational Church Names Interim Minister specialist in counseling and family relations, the Rev. Frank M. Bockus, Ph.D, has assumed duties as interim minister at the First Congregational Church, 2150 Foothill Drive. Dr. Bockus, an ordained minister of the United Methodist Church, has lived in Salt Lake City for four years working in pastoral counseling and family therapy. He came to Utah to serve as a visiting professor in the field of family therapy at Brigham Young University. More recently, in addition to his private counseling practice, Dr. Bockus has given the sermons at the Sunday morning worship services at Our Saviors Lutheran Church and Hilltop United Methodist Church. A ter, Dr. Bockus said he will have no problems with the liturgy of the Congregational Church and has worked with the congregation in the past, having served as a consultant to an intern program at Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University, Dallas, which sent Psychotherapy Work With a doctor of philosophy degree in religion and psychological studies from the University of Chicago, most of his work has been in psychotherapy working with systems of family therapy, although here in Utah he has not devoted himself full time to counseling. He is now building up his practice. e He has served as pastor of two different congregations in Texas, and said both congregations grew to the point they built new buildings, but he didnt feel ready for a congregation of his own and went to graduate school instead of pursuing another congregation. He now enjoys his work as a counselor and said he hasnt considered a church of his own because a parish pastor cannnot spend that much Seeking Permanent Pastor Dr. Bockus will serve the intern John Currier to serve the church a couple of years ago. He said he has spent most of his years in the ministry in ecumenical pursuits. He once served as the executive director and adjunct associate professor of the Ecumenical Center for Religion and Health at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, where he worked with 13 denominations. full-tim- interim post for just a few months, until a permanent pastor can be found for First Congregational. While at the church, Dr. Bockus will be serving the church by preaching on Sundays and doing pastoral care, including hospital visits, weddings and funerals. The church has grown to the point, the programs practically run themselves, he said. Although he is a Methodist minis Rev. Frank Bockus Takes Interim Post WEST VALLEY Tenn., CITY The will Deweys of Nashville, perform at Valley Assembly of God, 3818 W. 4700 South, June 1 at 7 p.m. The Deweys, including Levoy and Cleon Dewey and their two daughters Cindy and Susie, have been per- forming since 1967 and have appeared in 25 foreign countries and in every state in the United States. The family writes most of their own music, which now numbers into Mf 300 E. chology. It's important to Dr. Bockus that in his own practice, he doesn't become inattentive to religious concerns. While serving the First Congregational Church, Dr. Bockus, will be preaching mainly on the theme of Biblical ethics and family and personal relationships, a topic he has begun researching and writing on. He calls the subject matter experimental, and hes had good feedback from members of Our Saviours and Hilltop churches. The topic stresses the human situation. He said a member at Our Saviours described his sermon as something you can take home with you.
