Between 7,000 and 8,000 Men Would Have Been Thrown Out of Employment Em-ployment But for Conference With Road Officials. Winnipeg, Man. The threatened strike of conductors and trainmen of the Canadian Pacific, ordered for Thursday, has been called off, it was officially announced here Wednesday afternoon, following a conference between be-tween representatives of the employees employ-ees and officials of the road. Immediately after the brief official announcement was issued brotherhood leaders dispatched messages to all districts, cancelling the strike order. It was said no statement would be issued regarding the. terms of settlement settle-ment until late Wednesday or Thursday. Thurs-day. Between 7,000 and 8,000 men were directly affected by the strike order. The men were demanding certain concessions con-cessions in working hours and wages. It was learned that one of the principal prin-cipal points at issue was decided in favor of the men. The train crews will be paid for their preparatory time prior to departure of trains. Another important question, that of guaranteed miles of way-freight crews was disposed dis-posed of by a compromise on 2,800 miles. The company desired to base salaries on mileage of 3,200, while the men wanted salaries based on 2,400 miles. |
