They reported that many . sailors from the sunken vessels were drowned. The rescued sailors, who are French, English and Italian, report that the raider is an armed sailing vessel with a gasoline motor. They say the raider showed the Norwegian flag and when It sighted a ship signaled sig-naled it to approach. As soon as the iSiip obeyed the signal the raider hoisted the German flag and opened fire. The firing was continued until the crews surrendered. Then the raider would take the sailors aboard and sink the ship. The French bark Cambronne of 1,863 gross tons, was last reported as sailing from Afltofagusta, Chile, De-oember De-oember 26, for Brest, France. Trinidad is off the northern coast of Venezuela, between the Atlantic ocean and the Caribbean sea! From Trinidad to Rio Janeiro is approximately approximate-ly 3,000 miles. The Cambronne being a sailing vessel, probably was overtaken over-taken while on her way to France, and, taking into account adverse weather and winds, she may have been several weeks or more in making mak-ing the journey from Trinidad to Rio Janeiro. |
