Latest President of Mexican Republic Leaves Capital in Hands of Followers Follow-ers of the "First Chief," and Will Join Followers at Cuernavaca. JMexico City. General Alvaro O'o-regon, O'o-regon, at the head of the constitutionalist constitution-alist army, re-entered Mexico City at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon. It was the most peaceful entry of a victorious victo-rious army in recent history of the many turn overs of affairs in Mexico. Here and there, when the constitutionalists' constitu-tionalists' vanguard happened to meet the belated outgoing Zapatistas, there were clashes, which resulted in a few soldiers being killed, but nothing noth-ing of importance occurred to disturb the serenity of the triumphal march from the suburb of Guadalupe, where the constitutionalists had bivouacked during the night. General Obregon went immediately to the national palace, and in the name of Venustiano Carranza, the "first chief," took possession of the capital. A manifesto was promptly issued giving guarantees of the safety of lives and property. Martial law was also declared. Soon afterward a message mes-sage was sent to Carranza in Vera Cruz, notifying him of the reoccupa-tion reoccupa-tion of the capital city. When last heard from the retiring provisional president, Roque Gonzalez Gonza-lez Garza, was passing through the suburb of San Angel on the way to Cuernavaca, in the state of Morelos. |
