Allies Claiming That German Drive Has Been Checked and That Last Trenches Have Been Recaptured. The Russian general staff gave out the following statement on Sunday: '"In -the region of the forests north of Pillkailen and Gumbinnen (East Prussia) the battles continue. Here, in the region of the village of Le-begalen, Le-begalen, we repulsed the Germans by a counter attack with bayonets. "On the left bank of the Vistula, at the approaches to Borjimow, the Germans Ger-mans during the night of January 29 and the next day repeated their attacks at-tacks upon our positions, but were everywhere thrown back with great losses, except at one trench which remained re-mained in the hands of the enemy. In the region of the village of Jidomitze the German attempts to take the offensive of-fensive during the day of the 29th failed." Check to the German drive in the Argorme, recapture by the British of all the trenches they lost before La Bassee and loss by the French of several sev-eral trenches near La Basse and Arras, Ar-ras, are chronicled in official statements state-ments received fin London from Paris and Berlin. Most important to the allies was the news from the Argonne, where, in the woods of La Grurie, the scene of the German assault which forced the French to retire a distance of more than 200 'ards, the latter forces on Saturday repulsed three vigorous attacks at-tacks by the kaiser's troops in the vicinity of Fontaine Madame. This demonstrated to military critics crit-ics that while the Germans., may be able to inflict temporary losses in ground upon the French, they are incapable in-capable of carrying the advantage home. |
