Show 2 II The Salt Lake THlnino. Friday June I . 17, 1177 He has more hands than a dragon, more lives than a eat and L.A. FourComvrt more venom than a snake Guitarist Lacked in Passion H subtlety rare on his instrument, among jazz drummers, only Connie Kay of the late MJQ comes immediately to mind as Mannes equal in the full use of that drum set, chimes and bells, sticks and brushes and fingers, cymbals and drums alike, the mans a marvel The concert drew an estimated 900 people All were appreciative, though few could have known what to expect Individually, all four musicians are now Hollywood session players (after important solo careers) who are heard constantly if anonymously. But collectively, they have toured seldom since forming the Four, and recorded but twice for the obscure Concord label, not available here Just as their playing demonstrates a not entrely homogeneous mixture of styles, so does their repertone offer a glimpse at diverse interests. Thursdays concert included works by Bonfa and two Bachs, Weiss and Jobim, Gillespie, Gershwin and Rodrigo, as well as tunes or arrangements by Almeida, Shank and Brown The Rodrigo was, of course, the Adagio from the Concierto de Aranjuez, in yet another reduction for jazz combo, this one giving most of the orchestral part to Shank on alto sax and the guitar part to Almeida By David L Bee k Tribune Staff Writer It may be a measure of the strength of the four virtuosi who comprise the LA Four that at intermission Thursday mght, one man commented that he had come primarily to hear Launndo Almeida, the guitarist, while another thought Almeida the weakest of the four Weak in this context is relative Almeida is a superlative technical guitarist of great versatility; but a quiet one, unassertive and lacking in passion. In this quartet, surrounded by one of the most adept drummers and strongest bassists of our time Shelly Manne and Ray Brown, respectively Almeida simply disappeared, contenting himselt while with little harmonic fills and Brown's immensely strong, warm bass filled the Hotel Utah Grand Ballroom with melody It was Brown who, along with reed man Bud Shank, played lead lines most of the night, display ing a wealth of Invention as well as a peerless technique But Shank, who unlike the other three has never quite been a star, was not to be overmatched He played alto sax and flutes, and played beautifully As for Manne, he continues to drum with a time-keepin- g, jL 'X - -r s AVivV i THE MOST ,., DEVASTATING KARATE MACHINE 0 v ALIVE!
