Show Cast Where Butch and Sundance and Wild Bunch rode the range M, monoliths and ridges serrate the horizon in the central part of Utah, so is it any wonder it is known as Castle Country. These great crumbling sandstone formations take on the appearance of castles and citadels, palaces and towns as the visitor travels the area. And is it any wonder that these ridges and canyons provided safe hideouts for bandits of an early day, with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, along with the Wild Bunch, making much use of it. IN FACT, one of their most audacious robberies occurred at Castle Gate, near Price, Utah, major city of the area, where they held up a train to heist the payload, and got clean away. But thats all over now, and it is residents and visitors who tread and drive the old trails in this area of ancient upheaval and erosion. There are two major highways traversing this redrock wonderland. Interstate 70, a fast and comfortable highway, runs through the lower half of Castle Country and is said to be one of the most scenic drives in the nation. South of Price and then east is the Clev'eland-LloyDinosaur Quarry, where boulders scattered about large room-siz- e create a unique setting for the exhibit buildings, interpretive displays and picnic facilities. The Bureau of Land Management oper- d ates the quan-- and its facilities, and work goes on continuously. The quarry has been the site of digs since 1931, was visited by a Princeton University team in 1939-4The first complete skeleton taken from the quarry was by this group, and Al, the Allosaurus, is now on display at Princeton. 1. In later years, beginning in 1960, the University of Utah has taken some 10,000 bones from the area, representing about 100 different animals. More than 30 skeletons have been assembled from these bones and are now displayed in cities all over the nation and in other parts of the world. There is a visitor center, picnic, tables and In Castle Country, you can take a boat trip through Desolation Canyon on the Green River, wade into streams, try your angling luck at several lakes and reservoirs or take to the field with gun or camera in quest of deer, bear, and even mountain lion. In Castle Country, you are stepping back into ancient time, but now there are jeep trails and graded roads suitable for your automobile, taking you into the various areas of scenic delights. SAN RAFAEL Swell, for instance, is a combination of vividly colored buttes, gorges and canyons. From Wedge Overlook you can gaze down 1,000 feet below to the San Rafael River. Utahs largest g monolith is at Buckhorn Draw. And then theres Hondoo Arch, named for its resemblance to the eye of a g free-standin- lariat .... t v by old-tim- e cowboys. Goblin Valley in the southern area of Castle Country, has a conglomeration of weirdly shaped clay figures looking like a convention of gargoyles, gnomes and goblins. Take another scenic drive into Nine-MilCanyon, once the mam route from East to West, and youll find petroglyphs and in some areas, up the canyon, rums of the ancient inhabitants of the land and the remains of old log cabins. GREEN RIVER, at the eastern edge of the area is a launching point for the hundreds of boaters who make the annual Friendship Cruise over the Memorial Day weekend, going down the Green River to the confluence of the Green and Colorado River and then up the Colorado, ending their trip at Moab.
