Show BRITISH TAKE SIX VILLAGES. Have Shattered German Defense and Forced Teutons to Retire. London. On a twelve-mile front northeast of Arras and on a nine-mile front northwest of St. Quentin the forces of Field Marshal Haig have shattered the German defenses and forced the Germans to retire. North and east of the Vimy ridge in the Arras region the Britsh seized six villages from the Germans during a successful move forward from the Scarpe northward to near Loos. London Lon-don says a footing also has been gained gain-ed in the German trenches northeast of Lens, a mining and railroad cen ter. Vimy, Petit Vimy, Givenchy-En-Go-helle and Angres, all north of the Vimy ridge, and the villages of Wille-val Wille-val and Bailleul, east of the ridge, were taken in the advance. All these villages are on the slopes of the ridge. iSouth of the Arras Cambrai road it Is announced the British forces have gained ground east of Wancourt and are astride -the Hjndeniburg line as far as a point seven miles southwest of Arras. |
