J' Neal Bosshardt above manages the family business where natural mineral salt is turned into three products including Real Salt r' t44 By Paula Huff Tribune Staff Writer REDMOND Sevier County The legend goes pioneers who settled in Redmond often saw Native Americans on the outskirts of the community chopping the ground with their tomahawks Later a settler decided to investigate why the Indians returned to the same place each year to cut at the earth What he found was a huge natural salt deposit Once discovered settlers used the salt for livestock and themselves More than 50 years later LaMar and Milo Bosshardt were farming the same ground which is three miles north of Sa- lina Drought struck beef prices dropped and the brothers were almost forced off the family :arm But instead of selling the farm the Bosshardts tilled under their crops sold their cattle and started a business — mining salt Thirty years later Redmcnd Clay and Salt employs 25 people and has gross sales of $15 million a year peddling 50000 to 70000 tons of road and livestock salt The company has also expanded to sell salt for human consumption under the name American Orsa Inc The product is called Real Salt Neal Bosshardt manager of Redmond Clay and Salt's warEhouse sales and marketing said geologists estimate the natural mineral salt deposit formed thousands of years ago when mountains around Redmond were being pushed upward There was a body of sea water that congealed to form a large body of rock salt capturing within the crystalization at least 10 minerals besides sodium chloride Mr Bosshardt said Redmond Clay and Salt now digs salt from two mines Livestock and road salt remain their primary business however consumption of Real Salt is growing steadily For livestock large salt rocks are crushed into four different grades: superfine fine medium and coarse Superfine is fed to poultry while fine is mixed with cattle feed according to Mr Bosshardt The medium and coarse grades are for sheep and cattle Redmond Clay and Salt also sells large chunks of salt for livestock licks "Many d 1 fri'40! tF super-saturate- I: 1 0 ‘1 4 ) Sii) p "St RVATIVE S ! " 1174 E WI 44 ranchers prefer salt rock over pressed salt blocks" said Mr Bosshardt "Customers tell us if they put our salt rock next to a pressed block of salt the cows won't eat the pressed block" The rock salt is also superior because rain does not make it disintegrate as fast whereas pressed salt blocks dissolve like aspirin when touched with water Mr Bosshardt said The ground salt and rock salt is sold in 15 western states and Canada Road salt is ground and sold to customers within a 250 mile radius of Redmond The road salt business relies heavily on the weather "We're just like skiers we pray for good hard winters" said Mr Bosshardt But the "fun" product for the company is its latest addition: Real Salt It is made by a wholly owned subsidiary of Redmond Clay and Salt called American Orsa Inc Orsa is the first two letters of organic and salt The name was created by Senator Orrin Hatch "During the 60s and 70s our family took home the finest grade of livestock salt for table use" Mr Bosshardt said But it wasn't until 1976 that the family thought of selling the salt for human consumption "In the early 1970s there were some people that came to us to get some salt" said Mr Bosshardt "They wanted the cleanest piece they could find The lady was pregnant and she had read if she could get some natural salt that hadn't been kiln dried it wouldn't cause water T y b said That story inspired the Bosshardts to begin selling their salt for human use craze in the 1970s conThe health-foovinced them the product could be peddled easily since it is not kiln dried nor does it contain agents Though Real Salt is 9832 percent sodium chloride it also contains traces of calcium potassium magnesium sulphur zinc copper iodine iron phosphorus and manganese Today Real Salt is sold in health-foostores and used in gourmet restaurants See F-- Column 1 IA sol ' ' 5 inn ti Aorta Cm I 71 d '7 "Of rw IP4It 1 free-flowin- g d 2 4 q !fi S"k Redmond Clay and Salt has two salt It's Time for Investors to Begin Preparing for the January Effect By Bill Sing Los Angeles Times Writer Some things happen with regularity Old Faithful erupting Congress changing tax laws New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner firing managers And you can almost always count on the January effect That is the tendency of stocks to outperform stocks in January due largely to year-enmoves by institutional investors Investors who buy small and sell in stocks in often do well The effect works 80 percent to 90 percent of the time contends Robert A Haugen finance professor at the University of California Irvine and author of a book on the effect 15 for Between Dec 31 and oriented example the small-stocAmerican Stock Exchange market small-compan- d y Jn k gli y value index outperformed the bigstock-oriented Standard & Pool's 500 index in each of the past seven years Haugen says Last year the difference was about 3 percentage points he says In the 37 years between 1953 and 1989 the Standard & Poor's stock index (small stocks often are beat the S&P 500 in 35 out of 37 years notes Yale Hirsch publisher of the Stock Trader's Almanac and a market historian "The January effect is immense" Hirsch says Several factors produce the January effect The main one is the fact that institutional money managers — those pros who manage pension funds insurance company funds and otaer big investment pools — are rewarded for beating the S&P 500 As year-enapproaches money managers seek to lock in their gains corn low-price- d low-price- d pared to the S&P by selling off small stocks and buying big stocks That prices depresses small-stocThen when the new year begins they buy small stocks that they think will outperform the S&P 500 This massive buying boosts all stocks but small ones in particular (because if you buy big stocks you will only match the S&P 500) In fact studies have shown that most of the gains in the market for the entire year come usually in January — particularly the first two weeks Without January stocks on average perform only slightly better than Treasury bills Haugen says Stocks both large and small also tend to take off in early January because institutional money managers want to be fully invested in stocks starting off a new year for fear that large cash holdings may leave them trailing the market averages and k thus off to a bad start for the year suggests John A Connolly chief investment strategist at Dean Witter Reynolds But playing the January effect is no sure thing For one you might not time it right You run the risk of getting in or getting out too early or too late As more investors have learned of the January effect they are trying to get a quicker jump on it That has pushed the start of the effect into Who knows this year it might even start in late November For another you still could lose money if both small and large stocks go down That has happened several times in recent years The January effect doesn't guarantee you will make money if the market as a whole tumbles — you simply will lose less in small stocks One clue to gauge whether the January effect might occur this time around is to look at whether small stocks decline between now and A larger decline — possibly indicating that institutions are dumping — increases the chances of a strong January effect Hirsch argues "If stocks are now I'd be very bullish" be says "But if it's bullish now I'd be bearish later)" Haugen argues that the evidence for a strong January effect is already in The Friday the 13th mini-cras- h last month prompted many money managers to dump small stocks and go into safer blue chips he says These managers will be poised to jump back into small stocks in January he says How can you play the January ef god-awf- feet? Sophisticated investors with big bucks can build their own portfolio looking for real dogs: stocks that pay no dividends stocks that have performed poorly in the last five years stocks that have low prices even junk bonds (yes they also have a January effect) But be careful because not all small stocks will participate in the effect "It's hard to quantify which stocks you should buy" Hirsch says Because it's hard to pick the right group of small stocks most amateur investors should play the January effect through (no sales charge) mutual funds specializing in: y stocks Pick funds: that are part of large fund families with money market funds Then y011: can switch from the money fund into' the stock fund and switch back out) quickly and easily no-loa- d small-compan- t |
