officers were honored last week in the eighth annual Salt Lake City Police Department awards luncheon The awards included medals given to eight private citizens w ho risked their lives to help others or provided information which led to the solution of crimes Nine Salt Lake City Police officers also were recognized for actions considered above and beyond the call of duty Two VIPs scheduled to be at the luncheon — including the gucst of honor — were unable to attend The luncheon was held at the Salt Lake Marriott Hotel and was sponsored by the Honorary Colonels of Salt Lake City and the Salt Lake Rotary Club Retired Salt Lake City Police Chief E L "Bud" Willoughby who was to have been honored upon his official retirement was unable to attend because of ill health Mayor Palmer DePaulis had an emergency in his family Citizens honored ranged from a 7- year-ol- d boy who provided information resulting in the arrest of an assault suspect to an elderly woman who foiled a sexual assault in a downtown senior citizens apartment complex Those honored with the department's Citizen Service Medal included: — Sharon DePasquale who foiled a knife attack on another woman in a city grocery story parking lot "disregarding her own safety: — Gary Strong who pursued and suspect apprehended a purse-snatceven after the bandit had dropped the purse and was trying to make a getaway Ile then held the suspect until police arrived — William Talliaferro a d Vietnam veteran and former POW who aided police in developing information and building a case against a man who tried to hire him to commit a contract murder — Robert Thomas 26 who wrestied a gun away front a man who apparently was trying to abduct a woman near a west-sidgrocery store and then helped the woman to safety inside the store Seven-year-ol- Craig Yauney who led police officers to suspects and evidence in an assault case Also d honored was his nine-year-ol- d friend Carrie Monson who has since moved out of state — Ola Underwood an elderly woman who was honored for wrestling with a man trying to sexually assault a woman in the lobby of a senior citizens apartment complex She and an elderly man Carl Olsen held the suspect for police Mr Olsen has since died — David Atherley Tracy Ferguson and his father retired police Capt Don Ferguson were honored for stopping a downtown strong-arme- d robbery and assault and apprehending the suspect for arriving police officers — Crossroads security officers Can Lakey and Steve Barrett were credited with saving the life of a despondent man trying to jump from a downtown ledge Police officers receiving the police Meritorious Service Medal at the banquet included: — Vice Squad Detective Terry Orton recently promoted to sergeant for thwarting a prostitution and drug ring resulting in four people being charged with exploitation and selling drugs — Homicide Detective Jerry Mendez whose persistence in investigat4 ing the deaths of a retarded couple shot to death last August ultimately linked a third homicide to the suspect and resulted in a confession from the suspect — Patrol Officer Robert D actiOns Hawke whose quick first-aiat the scene of an automobile ar cidemt postponed — but could not avert — the death of a crash victim Medical personnel later commended Officer Hawke for his attemptso — Detective Celeste Paquett4 Bernards working in deep undeftover with Metro narcotics managed to infiltrate a drug ring in Park City that resulted in prosecutions of 42 people h following a single-handeinvestigation She then testified in numerous trials undergoing often grueling during which courtroom fopectators booed her on the stand Dlefense attorneys also hired private investigators to look into her persmaal life All of those charged in the: case were convicted — Officer Terry Mori whose investigation into crirms at Alice's a downtown youth hangout resulted in the revocations of the business licenses of three businesses allegedly involved in prostiturlion pornography and drugs —Officer Mark whose quick a suspicious thinking in questions-riperson in Liberty tbrk resutted in that man being arrested and ultimately charged in the brutal murder of a Kearns videop-stor- e owner in April Officer Peck had a picture of the man taken — later identified by eyewitnesses to Ur murder — and later dug througlit trash picked up in the park to recceuter evidence in the crime — Officers Kim Farnsworth Scott Hallock and Mack Humphries for saving the life of a man threatening to leap from a fTeeway overpass Star the departments was given to FBI agents Grant Alan Jacobsen and Cal Clegg for their invIvement in the arrest of a youth who allegedly kidnapped the young son of Utah chemica) corporation billionaire Jon M Huntsman Agen' Jacobsen was stabbed and critically wounded by the susipect while trying to separate the susfrect from the victim Also awarded the Police Star was Officer Robin Howell who chased and helped apprehend members of a Vietnamese gang robbing and terrorizing the Salt Lake Asian community Officer Howell gave chase to a carload of armed gang members who fired on him as he calmly radioed his position to other West received a $15000 donation from BP Minerals America in June The donation is the second of three in a three-yea- r $45000 commitment the company has made to the musetint's endowment program "Along with daily demonstrations special programs and workshops there are over 30 interactive exhibits for families to explore at the museum" said museum s executive director Celeste Schow "and the donation
