Show i 2T Sunday June The Salt Lake Tribune 11 o A I 5 1988 uerto Vallarta is no longer a sleepy fishing village Continued from T-that come highly recommended are the Almond House La Louisiane Daiquiri Dick's and Le Bistro Not recommended are Mexican Joe's (nice view but $15 a plate for Mexican food is too much) and Chino's Paradise (a real tourist trap up in the mountains that costs you an arm and a leg and may get you sick to boot) Bars abound along the waterfront Carlos O'Brian's remains a hot spot for mirth and merriment Discos such as The City Dump are popular in Vallarta and often stay open until 4 am La Iguana hosts a fiesta every Thursday and Sunday night Getting around: Taxis are plentiful — and cheap They prowl the city from the north end where the airport meets the marina to the middle of town and points south including the deluxe Camino Real and all the way to Mismaloya Beach and points further Where to shop: Browsing and buying is an artform in itself Bargaining here has pretty much gone the way of the dinosaur Goods values include Taxco silver Oaxaca pottery all kinds of swim-wea- r and sandals The municipal market near the bridge kulges with local crafts and wares Plaza Malecon is an inviting shop-Pi- g center Lety's is famous for san01s Swanky jewelry can be purdiased at Iguana de Oro :f:Where to stay: at the top begins and ends with your very own private villa Though there are several to choose from the folks who run Creative Leisure in San Francisco are condominium and villa vacations specialists With 18 years of experience and properties all over Mexico and Hawaii Creative Leisure offers dependable service and good value for the dollar They will rent you a swanky villa for a month or an economical apartment for a weekend if you so desire It is a great alternative to hotel life and a good way to experience the charms of Mexico My family stayed at Casa del Carrito built on the hillside overlooking Playa de los Muertos Part of Villa Tizoc our four bathroom casa also featured a private 1 swimming pool kitchen dining room living room and spacious terrace Daily maid service was includ- ed The only problem was the noise Built right on the main highway Villa Tizoc is privy to constant cacophony Motor traffic consisting of lumbering trucks and cars without mufflers zoomed around the corner day and night creating a deafening din that was downright Only at 4 am could you hear the crash of the nearby surf Visually the place was a 10 audibly about a 3 The open air design of the villa while providing wonderfully cooling breezes prevented us from shutting out the sounds of the street nerve-wrackin- g Nevertheless it was a delightful way to experience south of the bor- der vacationing Hotels in PV worth considering are the Camino Real Fiesta Americana Garza Blanca Krystal Vallarta and Buganvilias Sheraton Things to do: A sunset cruise aboard the Princess Vallarta is a must It leaves from the marina at 5:30 each evening and cruises all the way to Mismaloya and back The cruise includes dinner drinks a fantastic view of the suncity and an equally set Cost is $40 a person The waterfront avenue looking out over Banderas Bay is called the Malecon and is the city's most interesting street It is a lively place at night The Church of Guadelupe with its crown atop the steeple is PV's best known landmark and worth a look Gringo Gulch is filled with lovely homes many owned by Americans Sailboat excursions depart every morning from the marina The El Serape sails for Yelapa while the trimaran Dora Dora head for Las Animas Beach The trips last from 3 to 7 hours and offer food drink and swimming Things to remember: Drink only purified water Do not even think of drinking water from a tap The better restaurants in Puerto Vallarta serve purified water as well as purified ice cubes -- eff ir i inland waters of the "Emerald Isle" Each year Ireland's rivers and lakes or loughs as they are known in Gaelic lure about 200000 tourists who are content to pump $72 million d into the economy in return for a quiet spot of fishing But a government decision this year to impose an annual $24 license fee on wild brown trout is turning the picturesque loughs into a battleground — with unsuspecting foreign tourists caught in the middle Fishing for wild brown trout has always been free in Ireland apart from a modest fee of around $8 paid tn angling clubs who lease water rtghts to many lakes and rivers from the owners of the bordering lands Many Irish feel having to pay to enjoy one of their favorite sports is right
