At its equator, the giantj planet is about 88,700 miles in diameter, whiiTt is more than 11 times thu size of the earth. The fifttf closest planet to the sun was named Jupiter afteij the king of the Romaij gods by ancient 8M tronomers. Jupiter has a( least 13 satellites, morS than any other planet, j Because of heavji layers of dense cloudy that surround the planet! Jupiters surface cannot be seen from the earth' Most astronomers think that Jupiter is a large ball of hot liquid and that it has no solid surface at all. Others think that it may have a small solid core of rocky material -Zones, Beits Jupiter is made up oi a number of zones and belts on its clouds. The belts are seen through p telescope as dark hues that circle the planet parallel to its equator. The zones are areas between the belts. The widths and posis tion of Jupiters change slowly through the years. Astronomers helievo the belts and zones are made by various gases in the clouds. About 84 percent of Jupiter's atmosphere is made of hydrogen and about 15 percent of helium. There are small amounts of acetylene, d hi-Ir- S I Y. Wor Gry light-colore- VOU COULD VE MAD ALL. OoRd. Ammonia Clouds Astronomers say that the clouds around Jupiter that are visible from the earth are probably made up of frozen crystals of ammonia and methane. Scientists have not as yet accurately measured the atmospheric pressure on Jupiter. This is the force exerted by the weight of the gases on the planet's atmosphere. But they estimate the pressure near the tops of the clouds to be close to the earths atmospheric 14.7 pounds pressure of per square inch. They believe the pressure rises below the clouds. The interior of Jupiter is made up of extremely hot liquid hydrogen. But the core could be solid and most likely made up rocks of Any Life?
