Show ESCAPED CONVICT IS ! RETURNED TO JAIL Jack Higgins, the notorious burglar ; who was captured in Green River by W. F. Asimus, in the latter's store basement base-ment a couple of years ago, and who later escaped from the Davis county road camp, was brought back from Little Rock, Ark., a few days ago, and , returned lo the state prison. ; It was this smooth gentleman, it will be remembered, who presented such a pitiful plea to Judge Christensen at the time of receiving sentence, claiming ; : that he was an A-l honest man of a-bout a-bout the 50th degree, and was merely ' looking for a bed in the basement of Asimus' store, his possession of some cutlery b ing easily explained in his ' own eyes. He had the appearance oi I only lacking a barbers good servic s and a uniformly .striped suit to be perfectly per-fectly eligible to a prominent posidon , in the rogues gallery, and the judge acted accordingly. Higgins will probably spend the greater part of the next 15 years in. j prison. He has over a year to sti ve in j the Utah state prison, four years on an unfinished sentence in the Oregon peni- tentiary, from which place he escaped ' in October, 1912, and a term in a federal I prison for complicity in the robbery of ! a Little Rock suburban postoffice. At ! the time of his apprehension in Little Rock, postage stamps and otaer evidence evi-dence were found upon him and implicated impli-cated him in the postoffice robbery. At the conclusion of his term in the Oregon . prison he will have to face trial on the '; federal charge for which, it is said, conviction con-viction is almost certain, j Higgins made his escape from the St. ; Joseph camp about 1 o'clock in the i morning. He had been given consider-! consider-! able liberty on account of good conduct, so that the watch over him was not ; strict. His guard, C. E. Murphy, step- ted inio a tent to attend to a fire and Higgins seized the opportunity to s-1 s-1 cape m the darkness". The surrounding country was thoroughly seorched, but j the convict eluded pursuit. A reward of $50 goes to the Arkansas officer who j apprehended him. |
