Apparently not in Greece. Some weeks ago, Lt. Theofanis Petrou, 32, of the Athens Police Department was promoted to captain for his outstanding work in penetrating an international drug ring at the risk of his life. His wife Maria, 28, proud of her husbands achievement, wanted to learn the details of his exploits. His superiors refused to pass them on. Maria finally got one of her husbands colleagues to reveal the full story, then promptly sued him for divorce on grounds of adultery. What had happened was that Theofanis Petrou had been assigned to infiltrate a gang suspected of smuggling heroin into Athens from the Far East and then distributing it throughout Western Europe. Petrou was told that one of the gang leaders was an attractive Swiss blonde who succumbed periodically to the blandishments of tall, dark, handsome Greeks." Petrou made it his business to meet the blonde at a local bar, where he played the role of a confidence man in need of money. In a matter of weeks, she had him in her bed, on her payroll, and a trusted member of her gang. At the right moment, Petrou gave the signal to his chief. The Greek agents moved rapidly, arrested the Swiss beauty and four of her accomplices. At this writing, her identity has not been revealed since she is trading information for deportation instead of imprisonment. When Maria Petrou heard that her husband had committed adultery albeit in the line of duty she was outraged and filed for divorce despite the protestations of her husbands chief, who insisted, Captain Petrou should be praised instead of being penalized for what he has done. In a Greek court this past January, the Judge declared; The statutes on adultery do not provide for any exceptions. Found guilty, Petrou was sentenced to a minimum of 30 days in jail but allowed to buy out on payment of a $250 fine and alimony to his former wife.
