The Utes won the first RMISA meet of the season at Bozeman, Mont , and also won the second and third meets at Laramie, Wyoming and Crested Butte, Colo. The Utes came in second at Winter Park, Colo , and they were second again at their regional championships at Solitude. Both times the Utes have been relegated to second place the point margin has been less than five. And at Solitude, the defending NCAA champion University of Colorado skiers edged ). the Utes by only one point Lost Jumper One factor that has hurt Utahs chances is the loss of U S Ski Team jumper Kip Sundgaard He quit school to devote more time to the U S team and international competition But this year, for the first time m a while, the Utes have enough depth to carry them past the competition And it is more than just a squad of talented skiers. Many teams have talent but the Utes have something more The Solitude competition provides some clues to the team Weather was a problem. During the two-daevent it snowed almost four feet and the courses were rough. The planning and preparation of Utah coach Pat Miller and head alpine coach Roo Harris- was ruined by the storm It snowed so hard at times that the electronic timing became troublesome. Ha made four runs before the electric timing finally functioned properly and recorded his time With each successive rerun the ruts got deeper and the course became more difficult and he saw his chances for the top Steamboat seed slip away. After the first two reruns, coach Roo Harris would just point to the lift and Adde wouldnt even slow down before heading up for his next try at a time Up and Down Adde rode up the lift, skied the course and went up the lift again and after his fourth trip up the hill, and skung four times as many vertical feet as his competition, he still managed to finish in 15th place It is that type perseverance that should drive the Utes toward their first-eve- r NCAA ski title Action begins Wednesday with the giant slalom and continues with the cross country, slalom and jumping Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
