The hotel has been named "Hotel de la Montana". After lunch, they can spend the afternoon touring Cerro Verde. It's one of 10 national parks in this tiny country. ANOTHER NATIONAL park is Atecozol or "Fountain of the Lord of the Waters", situated in a green valley south of Izalco Volcano. It's considered one of the most charming of El Salvador's national parks. It has several natural swimming pools and picnic groves shaded by ceiba, palm and aromatic balsam trees. And always in the background, the stately grandeur of Izalco. The largest of El Salvador's six volcanic lakes is Ilopango, near the country's major airport. A favorite resort area for Salvadoreans, its shoreline is dotted with vacation homes and hotels. Few of today's carefree visitors realize that the sparkling blue lake was once a volcano. AN AMERICAN archeologist, Dr. Payson Sheets has collected evidence that a volcano on the site of the lake literally blew itself to pieces in one giant explosion around 200 A.D. Visitors to Lake Ilopango today find little evidence of the explosion. Further information on tourist attractions in El Salvador, is available from the El Salvador Tourist Board, P. O. AND THE FORCE that created the volcanos provides the country with a major portion of its energy needs. A geothermal plant in Ahuachapan taps underground volcanic steam and uses it to make electricity. The plant also attracts visitors on their way to nearby Los Ausoles, one of Central America's volcanic phenomena. This lunar-lik- e volcanic field, about a mile from the city of Ahuachapan has been described as the "Gateway to Hell". Hundreds of fissures in the earth emit steam and sulfuric vapors which the wind twists into weird and fantastic shapes. The whole area is filled with rumbling geysers and bubbling wells of mud. But those visitors who prefer to do their volcano viewing in 20th century luxury head for Izalco Volcano. Once known as the "Lighthouse of the Pacific" because of its regular eruptions every 15 minutes, Izalco Volcano was used as a beacon by ships on the Pacific. TO TAKE advantage of the spectacular eruptions, an enterprising business man built a hotel on nearby Mount Cerro Verde about a mile away. Almost on the day construction was completed, the volcano stopped erupting. The natives say Izalco will not awaken until the hotel is torn down. Nonetheless many visitors enjoy having lunch on the terrace of the modern structure overlooking the volcano. lj 0kc14)cck I 1 a oti we |
