Friday, April 14, marks the beginning of the 1978 Pacific Coast League year, and the Gulls will be at Derks Field, 7.30 p.m. to host the new Portland Beavers. Salt Lake will have a new field manager in the person of 39 year old Deron Johnson, the former slugger with the Phillies and Reds, whose major league career spanned 16 yams. "Im looking forward to managing in Salt Lake," commented Johnson.Were hopeful of bringing the PCL Pennant back to Derks Field. The Gulls first home stand consists of three games with Portland (Cleveland Indians farm club), two with Spokane (Milwaukee Brewers) and three games with Phoenix (Giants). Gulls General Manager Rainer Krowas points out two interesting twists in the schedule this season that should delight the fans; "First, there wont be anymore long five-dastands against one team. Instead, there will be mostly three-gam-e sets just like in the major leagues. "And, second, with the addition of v Portland and Vancouver, B.C., we will have two divisions and the first TWO finishers in each division will qualify for the playoffs." Salt Lake (California Angela) will remain in the Eastern Division with Phoenix, Tucson (Texas Rangers), Albu- (Dodgers), and newcomer San 3uerque Mariners). "Mark formerly was with the Albuquerque Dukes of the Pacific Coast league, and he is currently employed by the Golden Eagles Hockey Club. Kelly handles the promotional end of the Golden Eagles as well as with the media in Salt Lake. k k "The On Us have found a new groundskeeper this season in Angelo Cerroni. This set of 21 players, manager and trainer sold in excess of 3,000 sets last season. Second, Meadow Gold will be giving away items each home game to include safety flags for the kids. And, third, Meadow Golds Fan Appreciation Night will be set for sometime in August. "We have dealt with Art Teece since the 40s, notes Bill Terrill, General Manager at Meadow Gold. "And I have some great memories of Sammy Gehring whom 1 met in 1955. Sammy and Meadow Gold and Salt Lake baseball are rich in tradition in this valley." Meadow Gold Dairy will also feature a special promotion sometime V, June to center around their annuul "June is Dairy I Month program. 2 Jerry Howarth Named - Utah Sportecacter oi Year Jerry Howarth, play-by-pl- ay broadcaster for the Pacific Coast League Salt Lake Gulls, was named the Utah Sportscaster of the Year for 1977. Howarth was presented the Award by the National Sportscasters and Sports writers Association. Selection is through statewide balloting of writers and broadcasters. This award follows a 1976 honor in which Howarth was named one of the Top Ten Salesmen of the Year in the State of Utah by the Sales and Marketing Executives of Utah. Jerry is from Santa Clara, California, where he received a degree in Economics from the University of Santa Clara in 1968. He began his radio career in Tacoma, Washington, broadcasting football and basketball tor the University of Puget Sound and baseball for the Tacoma Twins in the Coast League from 1973 to 1975.
