Show Geneticist No Chicken to Success By Con Psarras Tribune Staff Writer MURRAY In a lot of ways, Nicole VanderHeyden owes her success to chickens. It was through her work with the birds that she last year won a trip to London, gained early admissions to the University of Utah and attained the respect of the scientific community. But not to give the birds too much credit, Nicoles achievements are due largely to ambition and an unflappable enthusiasm over her field of work namely, genetics. First Place Honors The Murray High School honors at senior last year won first-plathe National Science and Humanities Symposium in West Point, N.Y., for a paper she authored on the genetic traits of a certain breed of South American chicken and the effects of such traits on the patterns of feather growth. and categorizing the By characteristics of hundreds of chickens over a period of five years, Nicole proved or a pattern of feather that ear-tuf- t, growth peculiar to the breed, was genetically authored and genetically alterable. By determining the genetics of the trait, she explained, I found that when the bird has both (necessary) genes when its pure it kills the embryo because the feathers grow inside instead of outside the body andf suffocates the embryo. Research Continued The work she has performed with these known mostly for the blue eggs chickens has been continued by a that they lay number of professional researchers and, according to Nicole, scientists in Massachusetts and Oregon picked up on her work following the publication of her paper. Currently, Nicole, working at the University of Utah and at her home in Murray, is trying to prove that the trait is or governed by more multiple-alell- e, than one set of genes. A friend of mine in Oregon is trying to prove that only one set of genes controls We compare the pattern," she said. notes. ce cross-breedi- Nicole VanderHeyden holds one of the South American chickens she works with in a stady of genetics she is conducting. Im actually in favor of cloning, Nicole said. I think its a good technique and has a great deal of value but, with anything you can go too far. There should definitely be some restrictions on the an work. Its like nuclear energy important field but there are restrictions on what you can do with it With cloning, you can produce a race of people or animals or food that would have some real benefit to society,, but cautioned that you have to be careful. Swims, Runs Track Aside from her work with the chickens, which she began while an elementary school student, Nicole is active in a variety of sports including swimming and track and is a member of the German Club of Murray High. Ive been asked to give a lot of speeches lately not only about my work but about my travels through Europe, she said. It's been very exciting. Her parents, she says, go along with my work," and her three brothers dont interfere with her experiments as long as I take care of the chickens. At her Murray home shes housed over 100 birds, which she raised herself. Originally, she purchased the chickens from adevertisers In national poultry magazines. In a recent conversation, Nicole reflected on the current controversy over the genetic processes of cloning and DNA replication.
