Show by Larry Devine Culling THE CLASSICS: Ageless Bruno Walter continues to turn out some of the most satisfying recorded performances of standard repertorial works. His latest on the Columbia label is the Fourth Symphony of Brahms in which he conducts the Columbia Symphony. This is his third recording of this master-worand it would be difficult to imagine that the earlier two could compare with it in either substance or interest. The stereo is excellent, and the orchestra plays well. Another superb orchestral disc, is Angels stereo version of Beethovens "Pastorale as performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra under Otto Klemperer. This album was reviewed in this column when it was issued monaurally. This columnist s Beethoven is only increased in respect for Klemperer-conductethis neV stereo album. The over all spirit of this pciformance is such that it must certainly be ranked with those of Toscanini and Walter. In fact, the whole Beethoven cycle as released by inAngel under the Klemperer baton is one of the recording monuments. dustry's k, d Shelly Manne adds drum artistry to album. Bruno Walter conducts Brahms' symphony. RECORD CLUB THE NATIONAL presents A NEW CONCEPT IN RECORD CLUBS. A FREE STEREO CONSOLE -- . --3 'i-r LONDON CONTINUES its ambitious programing of operas. The latest, in stepeo, is Leoncavallo's "I Pagliacci. Maiio Del Monaco's portiayal of Canio is full of the dramatic emotion inherent in the role. His is one of the i idlest natural voices among living tenors, and he uses it to its best advantage in this work. His "Vosti la Giubba is among the best recouled. Cornell MacNeil appears as Tonio and Gabriella Tucci is heard as Nedda. Both, however, are overshadowed by the tonal power and dramatic impact of Pel Monaco. Mplinari Pradelli conducts the chorus and orchestra of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia of Romo. London also has released stereo recordings of Tchaikovskys Foul til and Fifth Symphonies. The better of the two is the Josef veision of the Fifth with the Vienna Phil-ha- i Krips-conducte- monic. THIS IS A GOOD performance -- it is, in fact, difficult to make Tchaikovsky sound bad and London's stereo continues to . impress with its breadth and clarity-- The second album finds Albert Wolff conducting the Paris Conservatory Orchestra in the Russian masters Symphony No. .4. Although the recording itself is good, the quality of performance is not up to that of the Vienna Philharmonic's Fifth. On thp pops side there is an engaging new album from Decca in which "Leroy Anderson Conducts His Music. Here is the best of this present day "pops king expertly pei formed. Included are such household tunes as "Syncopated Clock, "Fiddle Faddle, Serenata," and others. And from Angel comes a stereo version of Noel Cowards tuneful, nostalgic Bitter Sweet. Although the 1929 London it nonehit is now dated by present day standards, theless remains fresh musically. "Ill See You Again, "Kiss Me and "Zigenuer are the most durable of the melodies found on this disc. They are performed by Michael Collins Orchestra, the Rita Williams Singers and soloists. stage-wise- the expense of buying records at $5.98 and $6.98 per album been keeping you from enjoy- - Has ing music in your home? PICKING THE POPS: For the third straight year Contemporary teams its three top jazzmen who won all the major polls lor three consecutive years (1936, '57, 58). The unbeatable trio is composed of Barney Kessel, guitar; Shelly Manne, drums; and Ray Brown, bass. Once again this combo comes off with spontaneous improvisations that "make for the best in jazz listening. The album winds up with an unusual, upbeat version of "I Hear Music. This group is a trio in the best sense of the word, not a guitar with bass and drum accompaniment. The album's title: "Poll Winners Three! Two other jazz greats, vibes artist Milt Jackson and tenor saxman Coleman Hawkins, team on Atlantics "Bean Bags. The title refers to the nick names of these performers. Jackson is known as "Bags and Hawkins as "Bean. Backed by a rhythm section, Hawkins and Jackson give out with what may be termed an easy-t- listen-tromantic style of jazz. Typical of this style is their very lyrical version of Don't Take Your Love From Me. They can romp, too; yet always under control, however intense. The piano of Tommy Flannagan neatly complements the virtuosity of Jackson and Hawkins. "THE SWEET AND the Swingin' is Paul Westons latest for Capitol stereo) and, as the title implies, is a study in contrasts. The contrasts are produced by the typically smooth stylings of the Weston Strings and a swinging male chorus which weaves interesting vocal counter melodies therein. The Weston sound, always one of the most popular for easy background listening, has something new and spicy added in this album Which will enhance its already enviable position in the recording woild. Mercury's "Dixie in Hi Society features Barney Richards and his "rebels, a group which in this instance, serves up a combination of hotel music and Dixieland. This is essentially dance music; most of the albums tunes are show "hits which are given a mild Dixieland treatment. On the big band side is Everest's "Here Comes the Swingin Mr. Wilkins, featuring the orchestra and arrangements of Ernie Wilkins. The over all effect is one that goes back to the swing overtones. era, yet with up On the novel side this week are Corals "A Night at Sammys Bowery Follies which dates back to the Gay Nineties in spirit, 'The Pick of the Country, which is a compilation of all time favorite country recordings by a dozen different performers, and Deccas "New York, N.Y. which features George Russells orchestra and nostalgic Manhattanized narration by Jon Hendricks a sort of musical description of the Big City. easy-goin- e ..PHONE.
