Driving an automobile has come to be regarded as a right something like the right to vote Actually it is a privilege properly given only to those who are capable of driving a car with safety to themselves and others For various reasons all of us at one time or another are dangerous behind the wheel The conscientious individual mindful of his duties to his fellow men should voluntarily refrain from claiming the privilege of driving in such circumstances Of course the individual should not drive after consuming alcoholic beverages within a space of time which would damage his driving ability This varies with the quantity of alcohol which has been taken: roughly you should wait at least an hour after one drink and much longer if more drinks have been consumed Less well known is the fact that some drugs especially the antihista-minioften used by victims also impair and judgment or cause drowsiness cs hay-fev- i er 1 Are yeu physically fit? Certain physical disabilities should motivate the conscientious person to stop driving Many but not all persons with heart disease diabetes epilepsy or other disabling illnesses should put themselves in the category The mere fact of a heart attack how non-driv- er ever if there has been full recovery is no bar to driving Neither is diabetes nor epilepsy when seizures are few and preceded by adequate warning Such drivers should whenever possible avoid congested traffic If forced streams of into them they should remain in the e slower-movin- g lanes at the edge where warning of illness will enable them to get out of the way The person with a badly damaged ed fast-movi- “brittle" diabetic heart or the line between who lives on a razor-thi- n too much and too little insulin Should obviously not drive cars Neither should the epileptic with frequent severe and unpredictable seizures 2 Hew well de yeu see?
