| Show mwnycjw WORDS TO LIVE BY J j i I ' I ' t J a a U ' Dy OI7UCE CATTON Paliuer-Prl- u and Editor Winning r i v American Heritage” i - icJCu yi J( v i crv 1 ( ki v2res and 1 Is wor I JKliL Historian v left' it u )! f t J II L i i - 1 i It is 335 years since the Pilgrim their granaries filled with the fruits of the land and their hearts with solemn gratitude sat down to celebrate the first Thanksgiving in 1621 We can imagine that they must have looked around them with satisfaction at the visible evidences of their prospering in the new land — the snug dwellings the fields from which the tillage had been taken the meetinghouse where they had so lately thanked God for his bounty All this they had created with their own hands but it was courage and fortitude which had shaped the hands to their work And in the prayers they had uttered that morning they must have remembered the far bleaker scene which confronted them on the dark November day a year before when the "Mayflower” first dropped its anchor in the shelter of Cape Cod x x Then as Governor Bradford was to recall later the true nature of their choice was made plain: "They had now no freinds entertaine to Wellcome them nor inns no weatherbeaten refresh their body or houses or much less townes to repairs too to seeke for succoure What could they see but a hidious and desolate wildemes full of wild beasts andwilld men?
