Show Words To Live By p eople sometimes ask me, "Where did you go to school? They assume I shall tell them about such insti-tutio- as ns the Midwestern teacherscollege where I got a bachelors degree; or Columbia" University and Stanford University where I earned graduate degrees. Such questioners are therefore invariably surprised when I say, "I went to school to Miss Georgia Brown down at Caney, Kansas. For nearly a quarter of a century I served as a city school superintendent. I have known thousands of teachers, but Georgia Brown was the greatest of them all. When I was a lad in her class she used to say: "Kenneth, do you know there is a ladder that goes right up through the roof of this school house? You can climb up on that ladder as high as you want to go. But the base of it is here in this school. This is where you get on it. This is the only place you can start up it. )ne day Miss Brown told me, "Kenneth, I know your parents. They are just like my parents. They are honest, people of modest means. They are not going to be putting any silver spoon in your mouth, boy, because they havent got any. So you can forget about that now. God-fearin- g But you dont need a silver spoon. You've got the school That was many years ago but I still remember every word Miss Brown said. I remember it so well that I have devoted my life to keeping the ladders up in America.
