Only One Left From Early Days The' Salt Lake Tribune, Sunday, August 26, 1962 W21 I , Goldwyii Tunis an Unbelievable 80 By Bob Thomas Associated Press Writer , HOLLYW OOD, Aug. 25 "Some people think my 80th birthday is some kind of a publicity stunt ," said Samuel Goldwyn with his familiar grin. "I can assure you it isnt. I was born in 1882;. thats something J I never lied about. Still, it was a reluctant Goldwyn who submitted to an interview as he approached his four-scorbirthday, which is Monday. Seldom reticent as a talker, he nonetheless seemed unwilling to capitalize on the event. Turns Down Stories I have turned dowm, oh so many requests to do stories on my birthday; " he said. I have also refused suggestions to have a , big dinner ,in my honor. I dont want any- thing like His resolve against a dinner crumbled, however, when a delegatiorrof Industry and labor leaders later called on him with an urgent request for one. The banquet is being given by all branches of the industry Sunday on the eve of his birthday. He was in a characteristic pose seated Imperiously behind the neat, orderly desk In his tastefully decorated office at the Samuel Goldwyn Studios on Santa Monica Boulevard. At his fingertips were lines to key personnel of the studio, which rents space to movie and television producers. f His and Hers ' A small office adjoining is occupied by1 Frances Goldwyn, the producers handsome wife, who has shared his important decisions during their 38 years of marriage. They are said to run Hollywoods only "his and hers studio. I stay in good condition. I exercise every day of my life. I eat sensibly, but Im not one of those dieters. I dont take vitamin pills or anything like that' e that. PREE ' "I am living the same way I always have, with one exception: I dont go out at night as much as I used to, I dont miss that at alt In fact it is a pleasure not to have to listen to the same old talk. Looks the Same Goldwyn, who .still plays a mean game of croquet on the green of his Beverly Hills mansion, looks little different at 80 from his appearance of 60, or 45, for that matter. The famed, shiny Goldwyn dome appeared early In his manhood, giving him an ageless look that remains today. His color is good, his posture erect and his stride swift he is second only to Harry Truman as a famous walker. in films He looks back on his with a degree of amazement its strange that Im the only one left from those early days. He has produced hundreds of films and I . asked him which he remembered most fondWuthering Heights, ly. He mentioned though he made It sound like Withering a stray Goldwynism? Likes All His Films Also Best Years of Our Lives, he added. I liked the Danny Kaye films; they were, highly successful and still are, especially The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. I also liked Pride of the Yankees and others. In fact, I liked all of my pictures. The trouble is that they are Ukejyourown chil Film producer Samuel Goldwyn, who will be 80 on Monday, dren: You like them but mabe other people and Mrs. Goldwyn as they arrived after European trip.
