Show HOWELL AND STRAUP NAMED Republicans Renominate Congressman Howell and Justice Straup - Adopt Local Option Plank The Republican State Convention was opened at Ogden Monday by a Ion;; and able speech by Senator Reed Smoot in which he reviewed the political situation in the state and nation in a wao that showed him to be abreast of the times on all public questions. On the mattef in which the people of Emery county lire most interested in a local way the prohibition question he dwelt at length and gave a thorough discussion of both sides of the problem. His arguments showed conclusively that to try and force a prohibition law on communities that do not want it can only result in failure. If they want it the law would likely be enforce 1, if they do not a state law would do little to bring about the desired result. His conclusions pointed out the safer and saner way of making it possible under the law for the community com-munity to have what it desires bv a vote of the people on the question His view of the matter was the one taken by the commi'tee on platform and the pro- visions are for local option. Straup was nominatedt.) succeed himself as justice of the supreme c urt. NHon. Jos. Howell was nominated to succeed himself as congressman con-gressman by a big majority. Colonel C. E. Loose was re-elected chairman of the state committee by a unanimous vote of the state committee at a meeting helJ in the office of Governor Gov-ernor Spry. R-ports from the various st-ite committeeman in attendance gave assurance that the state will go republican repub-lican by a good majority at the coming election. |
