Kids and Animals By Faith Maloney Fred and Barney, two Lhasa mixes, were the joy of their whole family - at least until daughter Arisa turned two years old. Arisas exploring fingers and aimless toddling were a real danger to these smaller, older dogs. Arisas parents, Lisa and Kevin, tried to protect the dogs but it was impossible to watch the toddler all the time. Poor Fred and Barney retaliated the only way they knew how when Arisa stepped over the line: they bit her. After that, Fred and Barney were relegated to a side yard most of the time. They hated being separated from the family, and whined and barked to the annoyance of the surrounding neighbors. A disaster all around. Two weeks ago, we found the two dogs a good new home with no kids and no annoying neigh12-year-- bors. How could this situation have been avoided? Kids and dogs are a natural together. Fred and Barney were little angels to Lisas now son Brian, even when he was going through the terrible twos. But by the age of 12, a dog is in the senior age bracket, and may have little or no tolerance for a 10-year-- blundering, small human. Many dogs remain calm around small children all through their lives, but small-siz- e dogs are often more vulnerable than a larger dog. If you are planning to have a large family, then having a large dog as the family their legs and dont understand the difference between a dog and a stuffed toy. Its easy enough to purchase several baby gates for around the house so that you can keep your small dog safely away from the baby. Teach your child how to touch a pet (always under your supervision) and when to leave a pet alone (like when he is eating or sleeping). Take every opportunity to reinforce these lessons. Never leave a small child and a dog of any size alone together. Its not only small dogs that are in danger around a young child. A friends young daughter was inconsolable when her beloved iguana died after she fell asleep with him under a bright heat light and he died from exposure. A small boy was traumatized when he accidentally killed his new kitten by putting her in a cooler and forgetting about her. Not only do these pets die, but it leaves a scar on the child, who never intended a terrible thing to happen to their new friend. Cats, kittens, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, turtles, snakes etc. can end up meeting an early end because of ignorance or rough handling. So, if you have a small pet, get a book explaining about its care - and read it! Growing up with animals is wonderful. If we grown-up- s make sure that the experience is safe for both child and animal, our children will have some special memories to take them through life. pet could be a lot safer all around than 0.
